I love this book. So beautiful and tragic. Hauntingly wonderful. The ending had me in tears. It was a pleasure to traverse this story experience the history of the Cherokee. I love this book.
Hobson's portrayal of grief is powerful and raw, capturing the many nuances and contradictions of the experience. He also weaves in elements of Cherokee culture and mythology, adding an extra layer of depth and richness to the story. The result is a deeply moving and unforgettable read that will stay with you long after you've finished the book.

I wanted to love this book because the concept is beautiful, and I've been craving more modern Native American stories. The beginning was timely and an effective catapult into the story of the Echota family, but then it sort of screeched to a halt. I think the main problem for me was that there were too many threads that never came together--there was the police violence, the Cherokee mythologies, the addiction, the alzheimer's, the family drama. There were just too many threads that I lost focus and wasn't motivated to finish the story. I DNF'ed it at 60%. Maybe I'll pick it back up one day.
For the record, I did love this line: "Kansas. It's a flat and desolate area of cockeyed mouth breathers."

I really liked the message of this book, but it was a bit slow for me. I still enjoyed it!

I fear I may just be too white to appreciate this one.
Beautiful and lyrical, a story about a family coping with legacies of ancestral trauma and loss, stemming from genocide of indigenous Americans. Told from the rotating perspective of each family member as they prepare for a memorial of a son killed by police. There are so many elements at play here and the author doesn’t over explain the layers of allegory which include Alzheimer’s disease, a foster kid who helps heal the family, drug addiction, Cherokee legends and a holographic first person shooter game. I really liked this one. Its a quick read but also really complex and heavy.
