I wish I had read this book as a child, when it would have seemed magical. As an adult, what I mainly felt was petrified, as the Ingalls family faced one peril after another. But the story is fascinating, despite the fact that I think Ma and Pa Ingalls made some unwise decisions that imperiled their family needlessly. And the blatant prejudice against Native Americans is very hard to read.

This is the second time I've read this with my kids. This time, we listened on audio. While I love Laura's writing and her sharing her story with us, Ma and some of the others' views towards indigenous people just churned my stomach. I know this was the way most white people viewed them, but it still bothers me. I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn't a made up book. This is how the author's mom truly felt. We did have a lot of conversations about it though.
