After Ellis and Shalvey’s phenomenal run, I almost didn’t pick up volume 2 of Moon Knightdue to the announcement that there would be a new writer and artist coming on board. But boy am I glad I did. Admittedly, it took until issue 10 for this volume to sink its hooks into me, but Wood and Smallwood’s arc really got my attention with the surprise they dropped in that issue, which I was very much not expecting.

My only complaints are that they didn’t let that particular idea play out a little longer, like into the next volume or so. The resolution comes about a bit too quickly after delivering a twist that could have easily become an arc or two all on its own.

I was also disappointed by the revelation that
Spoiler the doctor was driven by personal greed instead of her original revenge motif, which was a far more fascinating angle
. Still, Blackout is a worthy successor of its predecessor, with solid storytelling and artwork that has a lot of fun playing with the traditional comic panel layout. Admittedly, it took me a while to adjust from the shift from Shalvey to Smallwood, but his style compliments the story being told here, and I am very much hoping that this series doesn’t fall victim to Marvel’s pending reboot.

3.5 stars.

Despite going into this series thoroughly prepared to enjoy the second volume more than the first (largely due to Greg Smallwood's art), I ended up liking the first volume much better as a whole.
I expected to find the second volume's more cohesive story much more satisfying than the sporadic adventures of the first, but in the end I think it was a bit wasted on me, especially as I am not overly familiar with Moon Knight's history as a character.
After reading both volumes, Ellis and Shalvey's innovative, imaginative and wonderfully illustrated and coloured take on Moon Knight was the winner for me.

This reads much better as a collection in one sitting than as monthly issues. It captures some of all of the elements that make Moon Knight great. It had the multiple personalities, a little bit of the street grittiness from the original series, a little supernatural action and just enough craziness tomake it enjoyable. The art and the concept was good, but not always my favorite style. After reading some early Moon Knight in the Bad Moon Rising collection, I would like to see a return to some old fashioned stories on the streets.....Paging Mr Moench and Mr Sienkiewicz.....

Wood takes over the series from Ellis, and it starts off similarly to Ellis’ volume 1 short story-type narrative. However, Wood weaves threads throughout each chapters that have payoff in the end. Moon Knight stops a well-armed sniper from killing a foreign dignitary, but it’s clear the man is a mercenary paid by someone very powerful. He then foils a terrorist plot at One World Trade Center, but the whole encounter is recorded on a cell phone camera and released to the world. The doctor from volume 1 is back - she tries to convince Marc to help her take down the foreign dignitary, and she gets Khonshu for her efforts. She infiltrates a security detail that is supposed to be protecting him, and without Khonshu, Marc finds himself detained yet again in something like a mental facility. Now, he’ll have to make it out without the powers of his god behind him, and stop the doctor before she ignites a civil war in an African country.

Well written and innovatively drawn. I'm definitely enjoying this less well known character from the Marvel annals.

I was a bit annoyed, thinking they were going back into the 'diagnosis thing' here--but (spoiler alert) that was more about manipulating Moon Knight. Still enjoying this enough to look for more...eventually.

A definite improvement in storytelling from Vol. 1. The new creative team tries some experiments here with both art and writing. Some of it lands well--some doesn't. But it's nice to see a more unified story as Marc Spector makes himself known protecting those who travel by night.

I liked volume 1 and had been looking forward to this one. But a new creative team and a new point of view. And it basically sucked. Bad art. Bad story. Bad writing. Pretentious as hell. And just plain annoying. Well, bad doesn't quite capture it. More like weird in a non-good way. It was one extended story and not too long. And it was basically readable.
