This book was written in 1870 and translated, that means there are lots of words in here that I had no clue what they meant. The first 76 pages is extremely tedious, very slow to get to the point. Once we get to adventuring it got better, but Aronnax is the most boring narrator, I get he is a scientist of sorts but he details every fish, seaweed, clump of rock in excruciating detail, he is seeing wonders of the world that no one has seen except this crew and he makes it the most boring thing ever. I like aspects of this but the plot was extremely flimsy, they are held captive just cause they have seen the Nautilus. I mean they would never be able to find it again and its the only one of its kind so I doubt anyone would even believe them if they described it. Also they go to Atlantis and just effectively drive by it, why not explore this lost wonder, no lets describe seaweed for a paragraph instead. This is my problem with classics I just cant seem to love them, I did like parts but overall this is not a book for me.

It probably depends on the translation, but I thought this one was good except for some math. For example pressure was often given with weird units like so many pounds per square two-fifths of an inch. I suspect the conversion from metric to imperial was faulty. The lists of scientific names for sea creatures and plants grew tedious but I’m sure they were appreciated by the original audience. The story itself is adventurous and entertaining even though nothing is resolved. We never find out who Captain Nemo is or how he was done wrong. Who are these silent crew that never speak to Arronax or the others, who are barely seen for ten months while sharing a ship?

WARNING:
This book contains pages and PAGES OF FISH DESCRIPTIONS. So you better like fish.

This book was boring, scientifically inaccurate, and stereotyped the people of whole nations in unflattering ways. I know it's a classic, but it really shouldn't be. Maybe it was groundbreaking for the times, but it's just a mix of a hiring academic catalog with some obstacles to provide relief.
