Soz to the book club girlies but I just don’t want to read anymore.
Got about 55% of the way through. I don’t hate it, I simply don’t care for it and life’s just too short.
I think there’s a difference between something that’s literary and something that’s a good book, Peaces is a good example of this.
There is potential in the narrative and in the setting but there is just no substance to the novel as a narrative story. It’s difficult to understand and often pretentious. There are nuggets of nice writing and good ideas but they are difficult to get to through the convoluted way this is written.

Very weird, no idea what happens but there's a train and mongooses so what's not to love?
I'm surprised this book is at just about 3 stars as I write this. Personally enjoyed it. It was sort of just things happening throughout the narrative, but there was an air of whimsy through it all that kept me wanting to read more.

I feel terrible giving a book a 1 star rating but I can't find anything to really redeem it.
I found the story very difficult to follow, the characters very one dimensional to the point where I was forgetting who was who and the story very bland. I think there's supposed to be elements of mystery and whimsy but this was just not connecting with me. By the middle half I just wanted the book to end.
I have a rough idea what happened at the end but it's never really explored or explained (unless I'm missing something). I still do not understand the relationship between Ava and Prem which is the entire premise of the book.
I am, of course fully prepared to admit, this book may just not be for me. There are positive reviews and this was a book club read for me, so I'm looking forward to seeing what people thought.

Take a look at the 5 star reviews and how long they are. This will give you an idea of what kind of book this is, which may or may not be for you.
One thing it does well is it perfectly captures the feeling of overhearing uninteresting strangers drone on endlessly on the train, all while they think they're the pinnacle of intellect. Overall, it feels like someone trying too hard with obscure metaphors on AO3.

Such a disappointment. My least favourite Oyeyemi I’ve read so far.
