I read this immediately after watching Season 1 of the show. Definitely not the right order, and definitely entirely too close together, but in this one instance it worked.
This is my first John le Carré book. His writing is incredible and intense. The interplay of words, the thoughts you get to hear from characters, all incredibly well done. The plot is intense, left me guessing, and often afterwards I had to pause to try to figure out why the characters were making their various choices. I mostly never did figure out why. The intensity of the writing did leave me trying to arrange the characters to make sure I had them all straightened out.
For those of you who've come to the book from the TV show and are wondering if it's worth the read I vote yes. The TV storyline follows the book storyline for the most part, although it's brought into modern times and the location of some of the main events are different, but overall the book is just as intense as the TV series, perhaps more so. Definitely worth picking up.

Well now, this was an interesting one.
I'm not a huge fan of this genre usually, but this is a hell of a novel. In some aspects better than the mini-series, in others worse.
The spy stuff? Much better in the novel. The character stuff? Close, but I think the series edges it out a little with the acting talent they have to play with.
It's not all fantastic. I think the ending of the book falls a bit flat - especially the denouement. All a bit hurried and inconclusive. Well worth a read though.

4.5 stars- Although at time’s found bits of the story hard to follow, overall a good and gripping read. Not a genre I usually pick from but am glad I did as enjoyed it and now interested in other crime/thriller novels.
Incredibly well written. I haven't read any of le Carré's books before, and I'm pretty astonished at the delicate suspense he builds and the breadth of his characters.
I am huge le Carre fan to begin with so my expectations were high for this novel and thankfully the storyline lived upto my expectations.
Also the story follows the TV series fairly faithfully until towards the end - so if you have watched the TV show, then you still have a good read ahead of you.
It's intriguing as you watch Pine become further enmeshed in the high stakes world that Roper inhabits. Wondering on occasion, if he has succumbed to the glamour etc.
Full of the usual plot twists and turns that you can expect from le Carre. A slightly 'happier' ending that what I would have expected but still enjoyable none the less.
Excellent, shall reread in a few years when I've forgotten how brilliant it is.
