Really enjoyed this. It was the first audiobook I’ve listened to with a full cast and sound effects. The voice actors did an amazing job. It was basically a movie without the pictures. I would give the plot 4 stars, it was interesting and unique in the sense that apocalyptic creatures are usually zombies and not vampires. I did like the fact that the vampires in this book were morally grey. Looking forward to the next book!

What a phenomenal audio production. From the get-go, the music, storyline and sounds grip you and you want to continue listening the whole time. It felt like listening to a movie while driving (I listen to audiobooks while driving to work) so it was a shame when I reached my destination and couldn't listen further.

The characters are strong and their development is well written. The story line gripping and captivating and overall this is such a cool book to listen to.

Impact Winter follows a group of survivors after a comet has hit earth and made it winter all year round. They are safe in a bunker under a castle in England but there is something out there to worry about.... vampires. We follow Darcy mainly and she is a badass who just wants to protect her sister Hope. I thought the dynamic between them was interesting and well developed. It's a full cast production, which made it easy to get immersed in the story and I think everyone did a great job. I would love to have a sequel to find out what happens next.

DEFINITELY better than The Sea in the Sky. The sound effects were definitely too much at times, this was quite a loud listen lol.
This would've been better as a show rather than audio drama imo. It was also too short, things felted rushed. I do however plan to come back for season 2, maybe Amazon can do better than 3 stars 😂😂

“There’s the tea. Do you fancy a cup—sorry, do you still drink tea?”
“Don’t be an idiot, Felix. I’m still English.”

Set in 2042, this story starts seven years after a comet hits Earth and blots out the sun, turning the world into a frozen wasteland. In the aftermath, vampires emerge and few people remain. In Dartmoor, near the moorland in Devon, England, a group of survivors has set up base in an old WWII bunker under a medieval castle. Darcy Dunraven, an experienced vampire killer, has observed three types of vampires and helps protect the survivors. Suspicious newcomers Penelope and Anton arrive during a snowstorm and are later revealed to be vampires supposedly seeking asylum. Penelope ends up caged, and another conflict arises. Darcy’s sister Hope, who longs for freedom after hiding away for seven years, decides to run away with her boyfriend Jory to become vampires. While mounting a rescue, Darcy encounters shapeshifting vampire Rook. Near-death at the hands of Rook, she chooses to turn.

After being turned into a so-called Anointed One, Darcy refuses to return to the castle and, oddly, after being firmly anti-vampire, instantly accepts being one and is like “well, might as well have vampire sex” with Rook. And Hope also swings all over the place as far as her opinions. She goes on and on about missing her sister even though Hope put everything into motion with her desire to leave the bunker behind – only reneging after being rescued before being “vampired.” These inconsistencies in the two main characters were incredibly irritating. Also, eerie child vampire Whisper was distractingly like Red Queen from “Resident Evil.”

I love listening to ambiance so the wintry weather sounds were just right for me. I think this Audible full cast production was mostly successful in being an immersive experience even if the story wasn’t perfect and some of the sounds, like the dramatic music, were too loud.

Verdict
An interesting but frustrating read. The characters are exasperatingly inconsistent or just plain stupid regarding their actions/choices. I seriously don’t understand Darcy even though the book tries to explain it all away at the end with her speech on how things aren't black or white, and her stance was wrong before she was a vampire. The only character I liked was Felix. Almost bumped this rating up a star just for him but couldn't do it.

So, who would enjoy this book?
I suppose horror lovers may enjoy it. I wanted to try something different, which is why I listened to it. It's definitely not the right fit for every reader though since some may be a bit more opposed to the sound effects.
