So sweet. The plight of thr MacGregors just broke my heart..especially what happened to Patrick's family. Great story about love conquering against all odds. And what is it with highland men trying to do what they think is best, and make decisions for the women? I'd smack them over the head, too.

Things I liked:
  • Lizzy was such a wonderful character. It had me wishing that things could’ve been different for this couple.
Things I didn’t like:
  • Honestly, I had such high expectations for this that it ended up feeling underwhelming.
  • I have a really hard time with deception plots and this one was no different.

4.5 stars... With Ms. McCarty's typical aplomb Patrick and Lizzie lead us all on a merry chase asking us if we could decide between love and duty. With great characters, interesting plot twists and scarily accurate interweaving with the first story in the series, this book is a wonder to read and leaves a wonderfully lasting impression.
Cannot wait for the end of this wonderful series with the story of Duncan's life.
If you've never read this series, do it. NOW!

Another great highland romp from Monica McCarty. This time, there was just as much emotion and drama as the first book in the trilogy, Highland Warrior, but whereas that all came from external forces, this time, the heartache comes from within.

I really just wanted to shout at the two main characters from the very first pages because there was so much deception going on, and it was so obviously all going to end in tears and upset, that it was like watching a slow motion train wreck. And I really felt for Lizzie when she found out the truth. I also have to commend McCarty for writing Patrick's character in such a way that although he did something awful, when you learned of his plight and the terrible history of his clan, you forgave him.

"God knows why with the way you are acting right now, but for some reason you make me happy. I love you and I'd rather endure hell with you than hell without.”

The love scenes were very hot as I'm coming to expect from this author, and the ending totally satisfying. A great read- highly recommended!

Patrick MacGregor is a wanted man. His clan of MacGregors has been declared outlaws. Their lands were taken from them many years ago. Patrick has not had a home since he was ten years old, when the Campbells came and killed his parents in front of him. He escaped with his siblings and has lived on the run for twenty years.

Patrick’s cousin, Alisdair, the chief of the MacGregors, could never resist a challenge. Patrick can’t believe what he is doing. He is competing in the archery contest at inveraray Castle, the Highland stronghold of Clan Campbell. His plan is to win the contest then reveal himself as Alisdair MacGregor so everyone knows who the best archer in the Highlands is and get away while Patrick and his brother distract everyone by making the giant tent collapse on top of everyone.

While Patrick is waiting for the signal, he is intrigued by a small lass walking in his direction. Nearby, a man is bragging about how he is betrothed to Elizabeth Campbell who has a stuttering problem and has had two other betrothals that were broken and how easy it was to pretend he was interested in her because she was so desperate that he only had to give her compliments and she “lapped them up like a grateful pup”. When the lass looks devastated and horrified, he realizes that she must be Elizabeth Campbell. She tries to say something but stutters and then slips and falls in the mud. All the men laugh at her and say that her feet are just as tangled as her tongue. Patrick is disgusted by the men and helps her up. She is so embarrassed that she doesn’t even look at him and walks hurriedly away. Because he helped her, he almost gets caught by her brother Jamie who recognizes him but he and his clan get away.

Elizabeth Campbell has a huge tocher or dowry but she actually owns land in her name also which is rare for a woman. She is on her way to see her cousin, the Earl of Argyll, because he summoned her. From his letter which tells her that he is giving her more land, she can tell that it is just another way to tell her that he is going to betroth her to someone again. Her last betrothal was a disaster. Her betrothed made her believe that he loved her but learned the truth when she overheard him bragging about how desperate she was. She is now 26 years old which is considered too old not to be married.

Her carriage is attacked by outlaw MacGregors but is saved by a man named Patrick Murray. A lot of her guardsmen are badly wounded or dead so she travels back to Castle Campbell with Patrick Murray and his men to get help. He saves her life again when a wolf tries to attack her by killing it with his bare hands. She finds herself very attracted to him.

Clan MacGregor has learned that the Earl of Argyll is giving Patrick’s parents lands to Elizabeth Campbell who since the day of the archery games, they have called Patrick’s Campbell because of his gallantry almost getting them caught. They want the lands and plan to have Patrick get close to her and convince her to marry him. They set up the attack on her carriage but nobody was supposed to have been hurt. His brother Gregor, who is wild and savage from living on the run too long, acted rashly, almost killing Elizabeth in the process. Patrick came to her rescue which was the original plan but he wasn’t planning on his brother trying to kill Elizabeth and her stabbing him in the stomach. He had to threaten to kill his brother so he would let her go. Now, he is finding himself falling for her for real. Will she ever forgive him for tricking her?

Once again, Monica McCarty had my emotions in turmoil. She is such a great writer to be able to make my heart go out to these characters. It’s crazy how she pulls me into the story and makes me emotionally attached to the hero and heroine.

I’m definitely going to read the last book of the trilogy. In fact, that’s what I’m going to do right now.

I swear this book series is driving me crazy. I won't even start on the un-historical aspects of this book (like saying "fuck" and "crap" in 1608). I do have to say I enjoyed this main female POV to the first one Caitriona. But this book was so slow...

Hopefully the third is book is much better...

As one of the outlawed MacGregors, Patrick MacGregor sees it as his duty to regain some of what was stolen from his clan. When he learns that Elizabeth Campbell, the cousin of his enemy, the Earl of Argyll, has part of the MacGregors’ land in her dowry, Patrick comes up with a plan. Staging an attack on the lady, Patrick rides to her rescue, hiding his identity as he sets out to seduce a hated Campbell. Only Patrick cannot hate Lizzie. Her beauty, spirit, and intelligence captivate him from the start.

Elizabeth Campbell has always done what she was told. Having been humiliated in the past by not one, but two broken engagements, Lizzie yearns to find a man who will see past her shy, obedient façade. When Patrick Murray rescues her from a band of MacGregors, Lizzie believes she may have found the man of her dreams; one who could respect and love her for who she is.

But Patrick cannot hide his identity forever. Nor, he finds, does he want to keep lying to Lizzie. Trapped on two different sides of politics and bloodshed, both Patrick and Lizzie have to question where their loyalties lie. For how can an outlawed MacGregor ever hope to marry a Campbell?

Star-crossed lovers have never been so sexy as in Highland Outlaw. Monica McCarty has delivered yet another intelligent, gorgeously-written romance that swept me off my feet.

Lizzie captured my heart from the first. She has been hurt by others in the past, yet she is never bitter, never loses her kindness. How can you not love a heroine who is both intelligent and giving? Patrick is a perfect example of why all of Ms. McCarty’s heroes are ones to dream about. He’s sensual, protective, and honorable. The responsibility he shoulders he takes seriously, but even with what has happened to his clan he doesn’t believe in blindly hating his enemy. What is rather unique about Highland Outlaw, indeed about the Campbell Trilogy as a whole, is that there is no good side/bad side, no black and white. People on both sides of the battle act with honor and dishonor, giving the story a realistic feel. My heart went out to both the MacGregors and the Campbells, and to Patrick and Lizzie in particular.

Highland Outlaw is the second book in Ms. McCarty’s phenomenal Campbell Trilogy. Though the romance itself stands on its own, there are spoilers for some major events which occur in the first book, Highland Warrior. I finished Highland Outlaw well-satisfied and eager for the final book in the trilogy, Highland Scoundrel. I must say, though, that both Highland Warrior and Highland Outlaw left me desperately hoping Ms. McCarty decides to write a book for Patrick’s sister, Annie, and the man she loves. While I cross my fingers for that to happen, I am more than happy to sit back and be taken back once more to the enchanting romance between Patrick and Lizzie.

★★★½.
In this sequel, the eldest MacGregor is doing his best to keep his outlaw clan together after their lands where stolen from under them. To add insult to injury, their land is added to Elizabeth Campbell's dowry to help make her an attractive bargain to someone willing to be loyal and ally with the crown.

Patrick sees the vulnerable Elizabeth as a way to get his lands back. AFter all, she has had 3 broken engagements and her family keeps adding enticements to make her more attractive to a suitor. So Patrick sets out to do whatever needs to be done to reclaim that which was stolen from him, but what happens when he sees what a great lady his enemy's sister truly is?

I enjoyed this one. Elizabeth looked weak, but she wasn't. She was loyal, trusting but not an easy mark. She made Patrick work and she was worthy of him. This series has a bunch of clans who are interrelated and i hope they find a way to make lasting peace.

I really like this series in a way that I didn't enjoy Highland guard. It is well developed and interesting. I can't wait for book 3.

Elizabeth Campbell has a sweet tempered nature, but has a inner obligation to her family: duty which she lives every day and every night of her life. She dedicated her life to her family, even though most of the time they don't take notice much of all that she does for them. She has had three past engagements, but neither pulled through to a marriage, of course the blame was not on her side. Both men thought her not up to their standards and so they left her high and dry. Lizzie has felt that she is less, that maybe there is some things that are wrong with her. She then hears word of her cousin that has land for her, but she knows that there is another man that her cousin desires for her to marry. So she goes to travel to visit him, on the way however they are severely attacked by outlaws, the MacGregors. Admist the attack, they are rescued by a band of fierce warriors, their leader claims to be Patrick Murray. Patrick, is the Laird of the MacGregors that are constantly hunted down and his people outcasts, barely able to survive. He desires his people's land that have been taken from them, so he comes up with a plan, to fall into Lizzie's good graces, to woo her, marry her so that he can obtain the land. He knows that it is necessary for both him and all that is left of his clan to survive. What he didn't plan on was the enchanting woman that he finds his cold heart softening for. He knows that if he doesn't succeed soon, that he is bound to fall in love with his worst enemy's daughter.

I found this to be such a captivating love story, and its filled with such delicate matters that at times it just breaks your heart. I just fell in love with Patrick and his duty to his people. Having watched his parents be murdered and the rest of his people driven out of their lands at threat of extinction, he has found a way to make sure that they will survive, but it will take sacrificing the happiness of the one woman he loves more than life itself. Lizzie is a charming yet sweet willed woman, who is innocent really in every way you can imagine. She doesn't believe that she is really attractive or desirable, but Patrick is the one man that makes her feel that one and the one man she finds herself falling in love with him.I think the one problem that I had, is that when the truth is revealed, Lizzie has a hard time accepting it. But one would think she would be more understanding of his situation, so that was really my only problem with the way she treats him after she finds out the whole truth, when its obvious that he truly loves her. I also found, especially toward the end, this to be a very emotional tale that had my heart spinning with exhaustion wondering how this would turn into a happy ending. It is a very satisfying read, one that if you like a good historical romance with handsome men in kilts with swordplay, wooing and a bit of danger and romance involved, then this one you will be captivated by.

I actually liked this book, at the end the MacGregor's were honorable men, well at least the followers of Patrick. I hate that we don't know what happen to Colin, Gregor, Annie and Niall. Hopefully those answers will come in the next book.
