This book is set during the second world war.  Lily is young and in love with Vincent. Life is changing as the winds of war sweep through Liverpool. Vincent is off to join the merchant navy. Later,  Lily finds out she is pregnant. Sent to live at St Jude's shelter with her young siblings to shield from the falling bombs, Lily discovers the cruelty of the nuns. Vowing to escape,  she makes plans to leave. The author captures the struggles of the time accurately. The plot unfolds quickly. While the story was engaging, there were moments that led to questions. One such moment was the quick reconciliation between Lily and Vincent after a serious falling out. Overall, it is a good read depicting a time in the past with important lessons to be learnt.
