this book was so much fun to read. a friend gave it to me a while ago to check out and i finally found it again and got to reading it, and i loved every second. it got me out of my reading slump and made me feel the way binge reading as a kid felt. it is a really interesting integration of sci fi and fantasy, and the world building and lore are easy to follow but still relatively complex and compelling. you can see some of the plot twists from miles away, but it was just so much fun that i can’t knock it for that.
cinder is such an interesting character, and i loved that she was her own individual within adhering to classic tropes and elements of the cinderella story. it was cool to experience her internal thought process and emotions, which also added another dimension to this unique take on the fairytale. i also really loved that this book had WAY more plot than just her progressing to and then having a relationship with the prince. the change she made to her relationship with her stepsisters was both touching and devastating. it was so nice to see someone in cinder’s corner for a while.
as a post covid reader, did the worldwide pandemic plot line hit wildly? yes
did i also immediately order the entire series for myself because i absolutely had to see what happened next? yes

A very fun read that scratches my guilty-pleasure-fairytale-young-adult itch. But why are the cyborgs ostracized?!

Well put together, great concept, great writing but the predictablility is why it lost a star. There was too much obvious forshadowing in the very beginning, and it disappointed me that I already knew the ending. Though the ambigious ending was better than the happily ever after I'd expected.
I wish there were strong female characters out there who didn't revolve around falling for a boy. But good read anyway.
I read this book in one sitting so that’s how I know the plot was definitely intriguing. It held my attention, I wanted to know what happened, and I truly cared about Cinder and what was going to happen to her.
Strong Points:
- Intriguing and unique plot. I hardly recognized I was reading a take on Cinderella as the story definitely had it’s own flair.
- Cinder is shy but NOT boring. So often I find “shy” characters to be as bland as stale Cheerios, but Cinder’s infernal dialogue made me really love her.
- GREAT world building! I’m a sucker for world building and this was well done.
Construction Criticism:
- Some of the writing felt clunky to me. Now, I did just finish reading Harry Potter so I was probably comparing two totally different styles, but the writing wasn’t impeccable.
- Prince Kai is a weak worm IMO. Cinder could do so much better. I didn’t like him at all.
- I needed to care more about Peony. Her death didn’t make me very sad.
Overall, a good read! Currently reading Scarlet so await my review on that.
