*edit to add, after a 2nd listen, I fell in love even more! Last of my TW marathon before I finally listen to Lovely Violent things!

And the audio book was FANTASTIC too!

Edit after finished to say NO CHANGE IN MY RATING! The only additional comment is WHEN THE HELL IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT?!? Don't make us wait too long for more of this series, please!

I'm gonna go ahead and start this review when I'm not quite finished with it but holy HELL, has Trisha Wolfe done it again! I will say, this lady was one of my first intros into dark romance, smut, or however you classify it, but this one is no different, except maybe better yet???

Halen and Kallum?? OMG YES! I'm a sucker for dark romance or whatever you want to call it, what can I say, and these 2... enemies (hmmm, but are they??) to lovers? (well....) I am just ready for EVEN more!! And I'll certainly update after I have finished it, but so far, 5.5 stars or more!

I received this Kindle version as an ARC read and am straight up DEVOURING it because I want to, not because I am being compensated in any way.

I'm honestly not sure how to review this book, you need to have an open mind and some basic understanding of philosophy specifically Socrates, Plato, Aristotle & Nietzsche because if you don't this could be difficult to follow and you could spend a lot of time feeling lost.
Halen is a criminologist & psychologist who works alongside the FBI to analyse crime scenes and present investigators with a profile of who the likely killer is. She has trauma in her past that isn't fully revealed by the end of the book. Kallum is a philosophy professor, covered in sigil tattoos, a sociopath & potentially a manipulative ritualistic serial killer, I say potentially because that isn't fully revealed by the end of the book either, but that doesn't stop Halen from requesting Kallums help on an investigation surrounding missing people from Hollows Row & 33 pairs of human eyes that are tied to trees being discovered.

This story is complex, it isn't just a hunt for a killer, it is steeped in philosophy and occult references which was both fascinating and at times confusing, the way it's written gave me Momemto vibes tbh. There was a lot of inner monologuing with flowery wording and philosophy mixed in, and although interesting did feel heavy after a while and made the story drag in places. Initially I didn't see or understand Kallums obsession with Halen or her draw to him but as the book goes along and we start getting answers although I still wasn't 100% sold on the romantic aspect, hopefully that improves over books 2&3. I was expecting more psychological thriller, I think, and less philosophy lesson with a dash of dark romance, this is dual POV, yet both characters are unreliable in their narration, so keep you on your toes. Kallum is intense, and his dark mind is intriguing AF so I'm looking forward to the next book to see where this goes. I listened to this on audio and Lucy Rivers & Joe Arden were incredible, their performances really brought this story and creep factor of a series like this to life and  and helped drag me through the heavier more tedious parts of the book for sure. 🌢🌢

I was a little disappointed about the ending, and the cliffhanger felt odd. Of course I want to know everything, but I feel like I could have gotten more answers (like more details on how they met,  more details about the suspect, etc.). The amount of philosophy was a lot for me, and felt confusing at times. Does the author not understand us smut readers are not usually philosophers?
