Another book reminding me that Backman is one of my all time favorite authors. While I enjoyed the journey of Beartown more than Us Against Them, this one tugged my heart strings a bit more. An excellent sequel overall, full of joy & grief & hope & so much more than just hockey.

$%^&.
Holy $%^&.
This is the kind of writing that makes you feel like you are a dying soul, gasping for air, with every breath sweeter and sweeter. You can never get enough, but never feel lacking.
We stand tall, because you stand tall.

I've rarely read a sequel that's so close to the first book in quality. It doesn't have quite the same magic—the world is bigger and more complicated, but it has the same emotions and the same captivating prose. Beartown was a complete story and didn't need a sequel at all, but this book definitely justified its own existence.

I sobbed. I laughed. I fell in love. And I felt rage. If was beautifully written and had so much depth and nuance. Amazingly heartbreaking.

Now that is a 5 star from me. The last 20% of the book exploded and wow what a read that was. The story, the history being told what that character will do in 20 years or so. WHAT A BOOK!!!
I have really fallen in love with this series and it will certainly be a re-read in the near future. I might even purchase proper hardback copies of the series, I loved it that much. Onto Book 3

Perfect
"Life is a weird thing. We spend all our time trying to manage different aspects of it, yet we are still largely shaped by things that happen beyond our control."
"So Bobo ties it around his head like a headband instead, and his brother and sister burst out laughing. He wears it like that all the way to the funeral, just because it makes them laugh."
"Benji’s face is wet, but his eyes are blazing when he replies,
“I didn’t think you drank with people like me.”
The sigh that emerges from Teemu’s lungs fills the whole corridor, bounces off the locked doors, and echoes off the low ceiling.
"For fuck’s sake, Benji. Do I have to drink with all the damn queers now? Can’t I start with just one?”"
"Ramona lets go of him. Sighs. Pours more whisky. “I know, boy. It is what it is. We’re just going to have to find a new normal, that’s all. There are two types of people now. Some of them need more time, and some need more sense. There’s no hope for the second group, but we might have to wait to see how many there are in the first group before we start beating it into their heads""
I could not stop annotating and highlighting and loving this book. How can someone write like this?
