this book continues just as the first book: the writing is beautiful, the story is carefully crafted and often misleads the reader for a while, all of the characters are unique and never just good or bad. the book is as much about community as the first one, and yes, ice hockey is still important, but it still really isn't a story about sports. the characters are the same as before, just a few new ones are introduced. it seamlessly continues after the first book, and even though the ending was absolutely heartbreaking, it fits the story. it immediately made me want to read the third book, especially because some things are already hinted at, but i feel like the story is once again complete on its own.

Backman did not disappoint, I'm not surprised. I loved this one just as much as "Beartown" if not more. Impeccable writing and story telling, the characters are deep, and their connections with each are meaningful and emotional. This is the kind of book that just speaks to my soul.

To start with the negative, i think that this book just had too many fake-outs and political machinations for me. The political machinations couldn’t really be avoided—they were part of the story that Backman wants to tell, and very necessary. I just found them boring. The fake-outs, on the other hand, felt distracting to that story. I think it made certain emotional moments feel cheap instead of impactful. That being said, this book does emotion and characters beautifully. There’s a really palpable sense of connection between the characters. And i think that’s really essential to the story of discord. Because you need that connection and that history if you want there to be stakes between warring entities. Once again, I’m at a loss for where this series might go in the next book. And I’m slightly worried about the fates of certain characters.

Comes nothing short of part 1. I was hooked.
I still can't get my head around how every character in this series is a fully fledged human, because there are a lot and I feel like I know them all. Fredrik Backman did an immaculate job here.

Not as strong as the first book but still solid. The writing is beautiful in my opinion but not action packed, even in intense moments. I reckon that works turn some people off but I enjoyed it. I'm anxious to read the conclusion to this series.

This book had way more political aspects than the previous one in the series and still not quite sure if I liked that or not. This book was also very very sad and depressing for a long time and that was a bit too much for me. It took 300 pages to finally get to see some light at the end of the tunnel. I did really like the themes of (found) family and unconditional love, friendship, sexism/feminism and lgbtqia+. This book was definitely an emotional rollercoaster.
