Similarly moving and challenging as the first book, but phew, the homophobia was almost too much. It should have been a predictable progression from the first book, if I’d have thought about it, but I hadn’t, so I wasn’t prepared. The same culture of toxic masculinity that feeds the destructive misogyny in book one, fuels the homophobia in book 2. I may take a little break before I begin the last book in the trilogy. So far I definitely recommend these books - if you enjoy descriptive stories about the complexities and contradictions of being human, but beware of the CW.

Fredrik Backman is my auto-buy author. I always enjoy his books, and I always love the English narrators. I wish had read this one sooner, so that Bear Town was fresher in my memory. I really enjoyed all of the characters featured in this book, and there are so many great lines in this book that will stick with me for a long time. I cried on multiple occasions, and can't recommend this book enough.

"Mom. You taught me that I don't have to have dreams. I can have goals."

I quite liked this book! Not quite as good as the third, (I think?) but I love the writing style. The author does these beautiful repetition phrases and says like a theory and then a story and brings it back to this big idea that I quite like.

This book - much like Beartown - stole my heart. These characters, this world, these words, they touched me in a way that few books have.

Backman understands the power that a silly game can have over communities and the people that live in them. They can unite but they can also divide. You against me. Us against them.

The way each story and live is intertwined makes it feel like I could walk into Beartown tomorrow. I could drink with Ramona, watch Hed take on Beartown in the rink, and stand cheering amongst the Pack. These people are my people. This is my community. I have been transported like that in a long time.
