IIIEEEEKKKK
Eine neue Reihe von Keiko Iwashita?! Call me in
lighthearted
Plot or Character Driven: Character

still in my shoujo mood, i decided at random to pick up iwashita keiko's newest series called choking on love mostly because it was in my recommended and the art style looked very appealing. sadly, beyond that it didn't really give me much more to work with.

the series plays out between two university students, one akanishi hibari who is a girl studying graphic design but has a low self-esteem about her own work and fears stepping out of her comfort zone. the other party is sausei gaku, a boy who studies oil painting and seemingly has a genius talent for it, but the manga focuses more on his role as the lead-singer of the band 'pantera negra' in which he is with fellow art university students.

the story kicks off when these two meet via an unlucky accident caused by gaku's recklessness. the two main leads become quick friends after their encounter that leads them to work on a school project together. gaku has a reckless but brave personality, which causes him to unknowingly come off as insensitive at times, but hibari quickly learns that he never actually means harm and he's a rather nice, supportive guy. gaku's brashness also helps hibari to step out of her comfort zone and take more risks with her designs. they grow a relationship through gaku encouraging and supporting hibari, while hibari helps gaku stay more grounded.

it's not as if there are glaring flaws with this series, but personally i couldn't find a lot of substance to it beyond that previously described dynamic. the art, especially of the main lead, is alluring and i liked that the cast was university age instead of high schoolers. but i also thought that the story was a bit boring for me. the main couple's chemistry was carried solely by the main guy. there's also not much of a tension or lead up to the main couple getting together. they're advancing fairly fast, which leaves me feeling like they're together without knowing much about each other. of course, the writer can work on that in later chapters but i just wasn't feeling it much.

it might be that i just grew out of this sort of basic shoujo formula at this point. maybe younger readers will find a lot more enjoyment in it.

Sooo gut!
