"Be vigilant, dentist."

Kingdom of Teeth was my first book from The Sisters of Slaughter (Michelle Garza & Melissa Lason), and it was a fun read! This is a bizarro fairy tale about the tooth fairy, her kingdom Molorarous, and her people the Hyperdontians.

I've had pretty good luck with bizarro books this year, and I was happy that I enjoyed Kingdom of Teeth. It's an intriguing set-up - the people of Molarous seem to mainly be made up of teeth, and they have many teeth on the outside.

At times, Kingdom of Teeth has some pretty nasty descriptions of teeth-related stuff. If you're easily grossed out by teeth stuff / body horror, this is probably not a book for you. I found myself unsettled by some of the more nauseating descriptions, but there isn't anything too extreme. It just means that I never want to be a fucking dentist & I already knew that before reading this book.

I wish the book would have focused a little more on the plague and villain. I feel like there was potential for a pretty sinister set-up, and it just sort of faded away. The ending was a bit anti-climactic, but this was still a fun novella to read. I also felt like it was a little predictable, but then again, it's a fairy tale. I liked that the hero was a guy who failed dental school - it's a feel-good story.

I would call Kingdom of Teeth a cute bizarro fairy tale. If you need a quick dose of the warm fuzzies, but still want to be a little disturbed, this is the perfect book to pick up. It's a fast and enjoyable read. I have another book from the Sisters of Slaughter to read soon, and I can't wait to pick it up! I love that they try out different subgenres within horror.
