my problem with romantasy is that it rarely delivers what was promised because more focus is placed on developing a try hard romance part of the plot than both aspects, ie. the fantasy part as well. This was an ok read for me, I was curious about Thana and Favre's story more so than the princess and the yamaja (cemented by the fact that those are the only two names I remember lol) and wished certain plot points were developed more
for instance more about the yamaja and Favare's powers
. This is definitely one of those not for me but could be for somebody else's books.

I had a really good time listening to the audiobook of Where Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I’m absolutely going to get a physical copy for my shelf when I can. As someone who grew up listening to my mom talk about mythology and folklore (she was a literature teacher and a big nerd), I felt like the building of a world of gods and goddesses from the ground up that rivaled the stories of our reality was done so well in this story. I also really enjoyed the writing itself in this book and the imagery it evoked from the words the author uses. The audiobook narration was also quite good and I think that the narrators did a good job of presenting both the strengths and youthfulness of the main characters who were not goddesses but simply women trying to survive their journey. I’ll definitely be picking up the second novel when it’s available and can recommend this if you like a YA/New Adult novel that has Sapphic characters and vampires in a world of mythical power.

This book was enjoyable and I can’t wait for book 2! The beginning was hard to follow when establishing the world, but that was likely because I listened to the audio book. Many of the names sound similar and there stories intertwine

I was bored and didn't find it compelling. The flashbacks (?) were confusing and hard to follow. I liked the present day as told by Layla, but the multi POV's were hard to follow.

The premise sounded interesting and I was excited for this one but from the first chapter I was confused as to who's who. Then we start jumping POV's and I couldn't keep up. For what it's worth, Caldwell's prose aren't bad, I actually liked her writing. But the story started on a climactic moment, then never got back up and the multi POV was a detriment.

Thank you to Patrice Caldwell, St. Martins Press, and NetGalley for this e-ARC! All opinions are my own.

I was very confused for the first quarter of the book and feel like there wasn’t enough time with any of the characters to get invested.

You know the saying "if you can't do, teach"? I feel like this unfortunately applies. The premise and world had so much potential, but this book suffers from what I consider to be a first draft. The characters and the relationship dynamics are underdeveloped and their feelings that are split into POVs are repetitive to the point where I disliked every main character in the book.

The romance felt forced and there was zero chemistry. They weren't given enough time for that tension to develop properly and the characters weren't fleshed out enough for me to care. I will reiterate that there was so much potential but the execution felt rushed and flat. I also blame the editor for this failure to make what could have been a really good novel. Toxic yuri? Sign me up every time. It's rare for me to say that a book needs to be longer (I prefer concise writing or intentionally exploratory) but this is where not enough was said for me to care about this world or the characters.

Honestly, this felt like a long outline for a book.
