This is the fourth book I've read from her, and I think this one isn't really for me. The plot actually interests me with those hybrids from experiments, but in fact, it didn't hook me into the story because it's quite predictable. I don't know if I expected a lot of twists, but there were none, and along the way, it became too bland until the ending. The characters, all of them, were just okay; they're not the type that attracts me to know them more, but most likely to be just there with adequate development and seem forgettable. The romance was a little unexpected for me. I mean, it was not shelved as romance, but I didn't see it coming since I saw them building a relationship as friends, and I felt weird about that for some reason of what happens in this book. Then I just mentioned it because it was there, but in the end, it's not important in this plot. After finishing reading with that agreeable ending, I think it needs more spark both for the plot and characters, and maybe adding some twists. Overall, it's not really one bad reading, but the aftertaste just isn't to my liking.

“The tide goes out and comes in”

This novel is fantastic! Silvia did such a great job on writing this story and describe the political issues going on during this time, the character development as they grow and learn true truths, and fall in and out of love.

Carlota is such a fantastic well developed person and I so wish she was real so I could meet her. A conversation with Carlota would be wonderful as she has a beautiful soul.

Montgomery is dealing with all his darkness while trying his hardest to be better.

The whole plot, location, sci-fiction, history, and characters made this a story I didn’t want to end.

Sped through this. Moreno-Garcia can tell a good story about a white man who plays god in Mexico. Mexican Gothic is definitely a deeper story but I enjoyed this almost as much.

This was so atmospheric and intriguing! I really enjoyed the characterisation and the perspective on the world. I did struggle sometimes with the overlapping narration - I'm not used to getting the same event from more than one perspective so often, and with my ADHD, I found myself confused as to whether I had missed something or read the same bit twice. That is very much a me problem though haha
