I’d check out the trigger warning first. This book was really interested in the topics it covered. I was a very personal display of how indigenous women don’t receive the justice they deserve for the traumas they experience. I really liked how the community and elders supported in un-static ways. I feel like grief was addressed fairly appropriately. I didn’t anticipate the twists of this book.

Se me hizo un poco extenso, pero me parece un muy buen libro. No sé cómo explicarlo de otra forma que decir que no era del todo para mí, pero pude reconocer mientras lo leía que a la gente le puede encantar

This was a powerful story. From all I’ve read, learned, and heard between books and my Indigenous friends, the themes in the story ring true, sadly and tragically, especially those of addiction and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Not sure how much FBI actually care, but I would like to think that regardless of if they do, there are people like Daunis whose courage is enough to bring healing to these tribes, which are and will continue to suffer from the generational trauma of forced colonization. My heart is heavy for every single one who has died as a result and live in destitution and despair today due to the generations of pain that cause people to turn to drugs and alcohol.

I don't usually read YA but this book was recommended to me by a friend and oh my gosh I'm so glad I gave it a chance. First, I love that this book is based in Michigan's upper peninsula. My family and I would visit our extended family there every summer and we always stayed in Sault Ste. Marie. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Secondly, even though this book is fiction, the history the main character shares is all accurate. I loved that the author included what would be the main character's native language as well, and made the indigenous culture a large part of this book.

While this book got off to a slow start, once the plot picked up everything moved pretty fast and I honestly never knew what to expect next. I'd say the last third of this book was not very predictable and I loved that. I wanted to keep listening to find out what would happen next.

This is a YA book but it does deal with some pretty heavy topics, so definitely be weary of the triggers.
