I remember reading this back in high school and thinking it was a very good and underrated manga. I picked it up again today and was pleased to find that it held up quite well. Many shonen manga series dealing with ghosts/spirits forget about the human aspect of them pretty quickly and end up focusing entirely on the spirits as monsters rather than who they were before death, whereas I don't remember ever feeling that about Muhyo & Roji's BSI. In volume 1, we get several short problem-of-the-week style chapters regarding ghosts haunting someone. Muhyo and Roji identify the ghost and then Muhyo sentences the ghost for its magical crime (spectral possession, unauthorized parasitation, etc.) and sends it to pass on to the afterlife or suffer forever down below. The first chapter is especially good with a ghost who is simultaneously horrifying and sympathetic so that there isn't an easy answer to her appropriate fate.

As for the main characters, Roji is pleasant and likeable. Muhyo is... really odd-looking and kind of a jerk. He is a genius who doesn't think much of normal people, but it is implied that there will be backstory to explain that. I don't remember disliking him last time I read this series, so I'm hoping that he will get better as the story progresses (or at least that I'll get used to his character design).

This volume continues the stuff that was great in volume 1, while also adding great new aspects of the series like Muhyo's backstory, more info about his relationship with Roji, and the interesting tendency for more well-spoken friendly ghosts to be evil and dangerous while the more sympathetic ghosts have lost themselves and thus are harder to understand. I'm very pleased that this series is holding up well and turning out to be just as good as when I first read it a decade ago.

I took a break from this series for a while and just picked up where I left off. Pretty early on, there's a comedic boob grab that reminded me why I put this series down. (I really dislike the shonen manga of nonconsensual groping and sexual assault as comedy.) But I liked this volume overall. Panza is an interesting villain and her backstory was quite good. While the early part of this volume reminded me why I stopped reading Muhyo and Roji, the later part reminded me why I liked the series to begin with. I'll read more and see where it goes.

This was a fun start to a new series. We follow two boys who run an investigation bureau tasked with finding ghosts and helping them cross over. Humans will come in with a supernatural problem, and they help them out. It was a fun first volume and introduced the world and the characters very well. If you want a good spooky manga to read for Halloween, I recommend it.

CW: Death of a Loved One, Grief, and Regret involved with losing someone.

This volume was even better than the first. We get introduced to more characters, including our main antagonist of the series. I loved it. The chapter with Nana's father almost made me cry. It discusses what it feels like to lose a loved one and the regret you feel when you can't apologize for a mistake. I highly recommend this series and I can't wait to read the next volume.

This volume was absolutely fantastic, and I'm hooked on this series now. We follow our group of magic users as they explore a high security magic prison in search of a deadly spirit. This volume was so intense and added a lot to the series. The first couple volumes were more monster of the week stories, now we're getting more interesting longer form stories. I highly recommend this series if you like supernatural manga.

This series keeps getting better and more exciting with every volume!

This was a great volume! Very exciting.

Great developments in this volume.

This was a great volume! I continue to love this series!
