I want to give the first two thirds of the book one star and the last third 4 stars so i’m just going with four stars.

would probably not recommend this book to anyone.

there are 3 rape/SA scenes that I really don’t think needed to be in there because they did nothing for the long term plot. the pacing was so slow in the beginning and nothing made sense and i wasn’t sure what i wasn’t supposed to know and kept thinking i forgetting things i needed to know (i wasn’t lol), the character development was severely lacking in the first two thirds. it was like nothing happened for 300 pages and then it was finally good in the last third and i want to read the next book because i liked the last third and i hope book two can just be the good parts of this book. maybe now that i know the world it will be? i hope?

Trigger Warning: Ninth House has a fair amount of sexual assault. It’s not glorified at all, but it is pretty graphic at times. The plot and character development are pretty wrapped into it. It wasn’t bad, but very startling coming from Leigh Bardugo’s ‘Shadow and Bone’ and ‘Six of Crows’ series. It has thought and intention behind it from her and her peers experiences, especially from within an institution. But parts were very tough to read.

Overall I really enjoyed the dark academia investigation,  but was a bit disappointed by the conclusion.  The author attended Yale and it's all based off of real secret societies there, minus the magic and ghosts (maybe), which is pretty neat. It makes me want to explore around Yale and visit these giant tombs.

I thought this book was fun! Fresh story in a market crowded with dark academia content. I would have preferred less emphasis on Alex's past, and more details about the eight houses, but that's just me. Worth a read if you're looking for an elevated adult fantasy that is still rooted in reality, the occult, and myth.

I was so prepared not to like this book. It was called horror, I thought it would be too scary for me. Instead it was a classic hit of Leigh Bardugo. It smacks of Book of Night by Holly Black, and also the end of Nina’s arc in King of Scars, which I always really enjoyed. I enjoy Bardugos writing style because I always feel safe with her. I know she isnt going to let the stuff I cant stand slide, she is going to deal with it in a way that feels compassionate and validating.
