I think the book tackled some difficult issues well and I could identify with some of the complex feelings of the characters. I appreciated the honesty in it.

I am apparently a sucker for books set in cold northeastern universities, with a dark or arcane academic magic system (trying to avoid using the oft-shamed dark academia), because this slapped.

I really thought I wasn't going to like the main character at first as an example of a "look at how badass I am" but honestly really ended up on her side. She's got specific and believable (also horrific) trauma and I think the impact on her personality rings true and makes her very interesting.

I am also a sucker for tall knowledgeable well-dressed dudes. This book was like fuckin catnip for me and I will be picking up the second one, fingers crossed

I was surprised by how much I liked this! I loved the atmosphere and I want to dive into book #2 immediately. I actually really loved Alex and the relationship she's building with Dawes and Turner. I'd really encourage people to check out content warnings before heading into this one - there are a lot of quite messed up scenes and they get very explicit.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. I’m so tired of magic schools, and I think that the responsibility heaped on college freshmen is probably the weakest part of the book, but the characters and mystery manage to carry the story anyway. It’s much more horror than I was expecting, so be wary of that if you are easily creeped out, but overall a good book. I’m not sure I liked it enough to read the sequel, but I mostly enjoyed this one.

2024 UPDATE:
Bumping up from 3.75 stars to a nice even 5. Loved this so much more the second time around. So much complexity, so many layers. The themes really came through and I will be thinking about this book for a long time. Trigger warnings: sexual assault, rape, gore.

Kinda gave me Addie LaRue vibes, but this succeeded where that one fell flat for me. I'd like a sequel, please.

Brilliantly executed, wonderfully dark. Starts slow, but oh my gosh the twists had me reeling. Those last 100 pages or so were so captivating, i couldn’t put it down! I grew to love the characters and deeply feel for them. Leigh Bardugo has an excellent way of crafting complex, twisted protagonists who are certainly not good people (in any sense of the word) but are just so very human
(except when they’re not)

Expertly crafted and deliciously tense. Alex Stern has teeth, and she's not afraid to use them.  The worldbuilding slots perfectly into real New Haven history, a wonderful mix of ordinary problems and magical interference. Bardugo is a master of her craft, and I cannot wait to read the sequel.
