This is a great book. I feel like the first chapter starts off a little slow but still good and then it just keeps picking up from there. Inside this world of dark magic controlled by students a lot can and will go sideways quick. The characters are built up perfectly and the plot was twisty just how I like it. To wrap up im really glad this is a series. Now on to book two!

Really enjoyable, dark academia meets ghosts, kind of scary but I loved it.

Heed trigger warnings!

Bardugo’s venture into adult fantasy was a good read! Weirdly predictable in the end, but still enjoyable. I’ll be reading Hellbent!

The beginning and end of the book both brought completely different feelings from me and I am surprised by the change sudden change.
The beginning of the book felt more like a history lesson with constant information being thrown at me and it lead to the pace of the book slowing down. While I normally do not mind background information being presented in this case, Leigh Bardugo may have went too far. It was also the case that most of the history was not understandable in the first read, I found the short explanations of the different societies at the end made it easier to understand the inner workings of Yale. Therefore through out the first half the book I was not extremely enthusiastic.
However, this changed when the plot began to unravel more, allowing me to completely focus on what is happening and think about how each of the characters will react to their predicaments. The two twists at the end were not something I expected, while I was close to getting one twist the other was completely unexpected. This sudden shift if the focus and dynamic is the reason I continued reading the book, along with my compulsion to finish and book that I start.
Overall, I would say that this book has been written well and while the information in the beginning may not have been useful to me it may useful to others. I believe that second half has convinced me to read the next book. We will see how I faire with this!

This book has everything I love: fully realized characters, dark moments, fantasy, and budding friendship. What it doesn’t have, which is refreshing, is romance. This is what A Discovery of Witches should have been, and could have been, if Matthew was a differently written character.

There are graphic scenes, though, and a couple descriptions left me feeling sick.

I couldn’t give it five stars, because I felt the prologue and first chapter didn’t draw me in, so much as confuse me. However, chapter two helped and I found after that, the timelines were fascinating, not just confusing.
