really it is 3.5 stars, but I once again am locked in battle with the Goodreads rating system!!!! Why is it so hard for Jeff Bezos to just listen to the masses and give us half stars!!!
Gonna be honest: I didn’t understand almost any of the references and a quarter of the jokes being made here, given the fact that this book is exceptionally dated and exceptionally British. I am very clearly not the target audience. However, still had a fun time! Despite the fact that Bridget and I only share being a woman in common, I felt quite a bit of sympathy for all her many terrible life choices and even some relatability with her attitude towards dieting and calorie-counting. And even if I didn’t get all of the (very dated, very British) jokes, I still found the book to be — as I imagine people from Bridget’s generation to say — an absolute hoot.
THAT BEING SAID. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THIS WAS A ROMCOM??? THE ROM IS BASICALLY NONEXISTENT??? Usually I just blame it on bad marketing, but this book is VERY CLEARLY a retelling of P&P. NOT TO MENTION that even if this book wasn’t intended to be a romance, the romance in here would still be very badly executed. Mark and Bridget meet like, what, SEVEN TIMES, maybe, throughout the entire YEAR this story takes place? And you’re telling me that THAT was enough time for Mark to FALL IN LOVE with Bridget to the point where he would go to PORTUGAL FIR A MONTH TO TRACK DOWN A CRIMINAL FOR HER??? WITHOUT GETTING PAID AT ALL??? I get that this is a P&P retelling and absurdity is part of this book’s schtick, but a) it’s supposed to be semi-relatable absurdity and b) in P&P, it was pretty obvious Darcy loved Elizabeth enough to go hunt down Wichkam… not so much with Mark and Bridget. I genuinely don’t understand. Anyway! The romance in this book, needless to say, sucked ass ☹️ very sad bc I felt that if Bridget and Darcy had gotten more page time together I would’ve been much more invested in them finally getting together and honestly, it probably would’ve been a much more logical conclusion to the story.

I didn't particularly like how much Bridget smokes, drinks and obsesses over her weight, but as someone who has never seen the movie nor read the book, I loved it! I couldn't stop giggling/laughing several times near the end, which is usually reserved for memes and tiktoks.
Obviously not a particularly feminist book, but Bridget's attempts at perfecting herself and her life are so relatable that I had to like it.

Different from the movie, but brilliant in its way. Ironic that both Colin Firth and Hugh Grant are mentioned in the novel. ^^;

Well it was funny, hilarious in some sort of way. But then who writes diary every minute, even when running late for work?! I felt bad for Bridget Jones, poor thing was so humiliated by everybody,and she was so obsessed with her weight( I mean who measures their weight everyday). I hate Daniel! He was so mean! Bridget's mom was also not "mom like" either. The introduction of the novel said that I'll find myself shouting, "Bridget Jones is me". I found myself shouting, "I don't want to be Bridget Jones!" Anyway, all in all, this book was not for me at all!
