i don't understand how this book is a best seller or "screamingly funny" as USA Today said it was . This book was not the least bit funny (only humour i found in this book was at the end, and ((SPOILER!) when she had her little pregnancy scare (stupid)), and the end with her mother's situation. other than that, a complete bore), and the main character bridget, was a complete dunce. What kind of 30 year old acts this way?

first of all, checking you weight every bloody hour is not how to see if you're losing weight. Then getting frustrated when you gain weight overnight. Clearly she didn't pay attention in PE. THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS (especially if you're not even exercising).

anyway i'm so annoyed that i couldn't stop reading this book because of my stupid personality of having to finish books just to know how it ends.

now excuse me while i make myself read through the 2nd book -.-'

(Now I'm 67/100 of the BBC "Books to Read Before You Die challenge)

The story is a 90's classic, where we spend a year in the life of Bridget Jones, a thirty something single woman who is quite neurotic to say the least. As she tries to quite smoking, lose weight (Despite not being overweight), stop drinking, think positive thoughts, and find a boyfriend on top of it all in a single year!

Can she do it?

This book is so much fun, I was smiling and inwardly chuckling the whole way through. As an American that loves British comedy, I just had so much fun with the audio. As someone who has audiobook as background noise for things like commuting to work, running errands, chores, and cooking as a way to make time go by fast. When an audiobook makes mundane everyday tasks go by quickly for me, that is a good sign indeed.

(Also the audio narrator was wonderful and breathed life into Bridget Jones and perfectly captured her personality.)

It is just a great social satire too. You can clearly see the wit behind social commentary on women's roles, dating, careers, upper class life, weight obsession. But above all the need for so many women to look perfect in their lives from career, to weight, to marriage. And just how insane the standards both society and women themselves put on women's shoulders.

That I oddly found just as relevant today as it was in 1996. I found the situations and thoughts that Bridget Jones has as relatable, even if I live a very different life from her. I feel that a lot of woman in general will relate to Jones of any era.

Just a darn good funny book. If you want a good laugh with a hidden level of social satire, it's just great fun and a treat to read or listen too.

This book deserves a "meh". I know plenty of women who love the book and the movie but I'm more on the fence about liking it or not. Bridget was very whiny, down on herself and completely obsessed with men. She tangles her self-worth in with how much she weighs and whether or not she has a boyfriend.

Maybe that's okay when you're 20 but not when you're a 30-something. She thinks she's fat and she weighs 125 pounds, give me a break. I found myself not liking her and getting really sick of her whining and her "woe is me" personality.

About halfway through I got a little bit into the story and decided to finish but I would definitely not read it again. I was rather dissapointed since I'd heard such good things about it.

I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The cover is very unassuming and not the typical style I'm usually drawn to. This was recommended by a friend who read a few quotes out which caught my interest; I then proceeded to buy the first two books and they are brilliant. Although there are aspects that haven't aged particularly well, this novel covers the insecurities and brutal failures of Bridget where there is always some kind of drama occurring. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys female lead comedies and just wants a good laugh!

I wonder if I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the book before seeing the movie. It was okay-had it’s funny moments. How I do enjoy the movie though...

-1 Star: Retelling/Predictable
Though it is essentially an Austen retread, the steely (if miss-placed) optimism of Bridget Jones is hopelessly endearing. There's a little of her in all of us, that is comforting and relatable. I think the story is a bit thin (or familiar) and predictable, but every time I think about it I smile.
