Cute and predictable but nothing ground breaking. The banter between Olivia and Thad was my favorite part, and I did really enjoy the side characters and friendships.
A light, fun read that I enjoyed when busy and didn't have time to go deeper.
I normally enjoy SEP books but this one feels off. It feels overwritten but bland. I'm still tearing into why this book felt so off.
My big issue is at the start of the book was the line. "She wasn't suicidal. She left that to others." Extremely oddly written and sets a weird tone. It left me very uncomfortable and I had trouble continuing reading it.

I kept waiting for this book to come together, but there was no chemistry between our main characters, a few sensitive topics handled rather clumsily, and about 100 too many pages.
I’d be hard pressed to call this a Chicago Stars book. Is it set in the world, yes. Does it have the charm of previous books, nope. The highlight of this book was the way too brief cameo of Heath, and it just made me wish I was reading a follow up to his story instead. Or honestly I just need to reread his book (or Dean’s) to get the bad taste of this book out of my mouth.
It gets 2 stars over one because Thad was alright. But the “conflict” at the end had me annoyed at everyone.
If you’re wanting a Chicago Stars story, skip this one and go back to earlier books in the series when the stories felt fresh and the characters were actually likeable.

This one was a DNF for me. I think I mentioned this on another review for this author, but I think I've grown away from enjoying her books. I loved her 20 years ago, but there's something about reading her more recent books that just isn't as enjoyable. I'm not sure if my tastes have changed or if her writing style has changed (or maybe not changed, I guess), but sadly she's no longer a go-to author for me.
Good not great
I really like SEP’s books. Always solid. Never disappoints. In recent years I’ve found them to be a bit formulaic in comparison to her earlier 5-6 books all of which I’ve re-read multiple times. This story was pleasant but if it were paperback rather than kindle I’d give it to Goodwill because I know I will never read it again. Either way. Worth reading but get it from the library.

2.5 ⭐️
The way I’m actually so devastated rn because I really thought I had my next favourite book in my hands.
But then that? Third? Act?
Huh??

I will always be a SEPPIE for life and I have my favorites from both the Chicago Stars (Mollie! Dr. Jane! Gracie Snow!), Wynette (Lucy!) Texas and the stand-alones (Daisy and Sugar Beth) and I eagerly await her books to add to my collection. This newest entry to the Chicago Stars series left me meh and I will hand-sell her backlist titles (see the ladies names above) but I would have a hard time recommending this book.
I was not invested in these characters or storyline. I found the plot to be a bit confusing and the characters had so many misunderstandings and continual putting themselves in danger that I ended up skimming through many pages which has not been typical of this fan. I think Ms. Phillips has done a wonderful job over the years with developing strong female characters with flaws and building beautiful stories with the growth but this one wasn't one. Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins/William Morrow for the opportunity to read this eARC.
