I read it in one sitting... so that's a good sign. I really thought it was going to be a terrible HP spin-off, but it was different and good in its own way. So yeah. Fully recommend

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is because I liked Baz and I enjoyed his characterization. Otherwise, this book was a complete mess. The story seemed like something I would write when I was in middle school. And wasn't it basically just a fan fiction for her other book, Fangirl? It definitely read like it was. All of the characters except Baz and occasionally Simon (mostly just his scenes with Baz) were so incredibly annoying. What was the point of Agatha? Why did we get her POV? She was so irrelevant. The writing style is also super immature. This is the first book I read by Rowell, but after reading this one, I'm not going to read anymore. The only part of the book that I sort of enjoyed was book 3 when it was more romance than the actual plot of the story. I had to force myself to continue reading everything else. Once I finished book 3, it literally took me DAYS to pick the book back up and finish, because I was just so done with it. When I finished, I actually slammed the book close and cheered because I was finished. This is super brutal, but I'm honestly just so disappointed in this book. It had so much potential and I heard such great things about it. What a shame.

In 2019, I stayed up all night reading this and squealing into my pillow. I absolutely fell in love with Simon and Baz. In 2021, after reading about Rainbow’s problematic writing, I went back to Carry On and saw some red flags I had sorely missed my first 4am read-through.
