An excellent book on a complicated field. This book clearly and concisely describes the birth and evolution of Existential philosophy through the stories of key figures in this field. It does well to explain the relationships, historical contexts and subtle differences in ideas. You will find it an accessible introduction to existentialism, but will also provide people familiar with this field interesting insights into the relationships and stories of these thinkers.

I have spent the past year of my life trying to understand existential philosophy. A tradition that needs to be understood in all its arguments, historical context and beauty. I picked up this book as an academic excercise but finished it with the excitement similar to a young boy reading the avengers comics.

This book made me want to read more philosophy, which talks to how good the author is at reigniting dying love of literature.

Good Reading for Authoritarian Times

As we enter the Trump era, it's important to think about freedom.

This book is a joint biography of philosophical thinkers in Europe in the mid-twentieth century. Heidegger, Sartre, De Beauvoir, etc. Existentialism is, at its core, concerned with freedom. As our choices become narrower, and the world more unpredictable and absurd, each of our free actions becomes more important.

This book is a great introduction to these thinkers, and it would be beneficial to us to give them some attention in these unsettling times.

I looooooved this book. I’ve been curious about phenomenology and existentialism since grad school - but reading primary texts with no context and little pre-existing knowledge is a slog. This provided rich insight into the history and personalities of existentialism while providing (what I imagine is) a high-level overview on the philosophy itself. A good book like this always sets my brain ping-ponging around in excitement.

Aside from being intellectually fun - I felt really connected with the ideas and people the author talked about. It a bit less lonely in my existentially-inclined brain, where I often find myself wondering how people get on life without constantly obsessing over meaning and being. I’m in (mostly) good company, it seems!
