TEEN ANGST!!! SPEAKING IN CAPS!! Oh man this was fun. A little too teen angsty at times, I had to take breaks to finish it, but overall I was very impressed with the eloquent prose and intricate magic system. I can appreciate a good perceived-hard-magic system flipped upside down with loopholes and special circumstances as a result of the chosen one trope.
The cast of characters in this book is plentiful and diverse and I appreciated how naturally the latter presents itself within the narrative. Each character's personality is delicately explored, and while they all bring a unique perspective to the story, I think my favorites were definitely Olivier and Emilio. I did think having 6 POVs could sometimes be overwhelming and found myself a little confused in the beginning, but all the narratives convene pretty well past the 60% mark. I honestly didn't have much space for August as his character was borderline annoying at best, downright antagonist at worst. His role in the story is understandable but I simply didn't care for his character.
This was a very fun and original book and I'm very excited for book two!

I’m afraid this just wasn’t for me. I really liked the premise but telling this story through six POV’s made it hard for me to connect with the characters. I think this also may be down to the characters having too many secrets with both the reader and within their relationships. Saying this, I think this story still has a lot of potential, it’s unique, well written and for a debut novel, it’s pretty impressive.
was really excited about the premise! I think the atmosphere was there, unfortunately the six POVs was a bit much (even on audio) and I felt like that lead to less time spent on developing the relationships between characters - even through we are supposed to believe some of them are romantic?? The twists were kinda easy to see coming, but overall i enjoyed! not sure if I will read/listen to the next book, but I'll keep it in mind.

This was hard for me to read. Overall I thought the plot was really interesting and I could see all that the author was weaving together. I LOVED were everyone ended up in the end. The big picture of the story was there. However, the multiple POVs caused parts to be disjointed and pacing felt off. There were points in the trials I felt like I had missed a chapter as we skipped around. I think if we had only 3 or 4 POVs (instead of 6) it would've been easier to follow. The magic system and world were also a bit hard to grasp.
