I wanted to love this one, I really did, but I have to say it wasn't quite what I was expecting (or hoping for). This turned out to make my daughter wonder even more about the things that go bump in the night, rather than easing her fears. And, the wondering just got more frightening for her as we kept reading.

There was that firt monster that turned out to be a dog, so we can say that worked out enough to settle some of her fears. But, we moved on to the rest and were left with tons more questions and more ideas for my daughter's mind to fear the shadows in the night. I mean, really, what was that thing, the blanket of night? Not sure, if I'll ever get my daughter to want to read this again.

An 8-year-old big kid shares his tips and tricks for handling monsters. I love the art of this. It's a gorgeous book, and I would gladly give 5 stars to the illustrations. However, I find myself far less enthusiastic about the story. It has a faintly lecturing sound and the rhyme felt a bit forced.

My Monster Friends and Me is an interesting take on a monster book. It features a young protagonist introducing the reader to the monsters (fears) in and around his home. He tells us that he used to be scared of them till he named them and now they are friends not foes. I've never seen a monster or fear/anxiety book for kids like this and I really like it. The rhymes are bit clunky at times but the concept it great and the illustrations are very bright and vibrant. This would make a great conversation starter for a fearful kiddo and provide them with a new coping mechanism to try.

The rhyme works better than that of many rhyming books. (I read the version of this book entitled 'Meet My Monsters'.)

What do you say about a book that completely fails at its premise?

It seems the message of this book is, "Yes, kids. There are monsters in your basement and under your bed, BUT what if you gave them a non-threatening name like 'Jake' or something? But always keep in mind that monsters are in fact real and definitely are living where you thought they were."

What I'm saying is that only adds to the problem it's trying to address.
