I am pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this one. I had heard mixed reviews and went into it cautiously. But, it was really cute! I’m no STEM girly, but I still really enjoyed this read. I laughed. I “eeek”-ed. Both MCs were very likable. Only good things to say. Definitely recommend!

Reread 2024:
This still breaks my heart in the best possible way. How I wished there was a book of their relationship after they were properly together. How I love them, how I’ve missed them.
———————————————————
Right off the bat I’m gonna say that I absolutely loved how the author introduced Adam right away. I used to think that readers needed some kind of backstory and to get to know the protagonist better before the hero was introduced, but boy, was I wrong. This was the perfect example.
I absolutely love when books actually bring something to the table other than the romance. When authors seem to know what they are talking about. The science talk in this was super entertaining and thanks to Ali for breaking it down so people that know nothing about science (me) could understand the terms and what was happening. What made his book a little more special is it touched lightly on social issues. Racism, sexism, misogyny and toxic masculinity. It touched lightly, letting us know they very much exist and happen to people every single day, but not too much to make the book serious or heavy. I can’t imagine what is must be like for women in STEM. What I’m guessing is a very cis man dominated field. What is must be to be sexually harassed, to not be taken seriously. To be discriminated for your sex or race, as if that should ever be taken into account.
Why do I love broody, mysterious, quiet, undeniably hot fictional characters so much? Can someone explain? I liked Adam from his very first line. The way he was obviously pinning for Olive for a while was so undeniably cute. How he struggled to not show his feelings, how he was always trying to accommodate Olive, always thoughtful, obliging, and attentive. How very intelligent he was, with his genius IQ and all. How clever and sharp he was, never missing a beat when Olive was such a smart-ass.
Olive is my spirit animal. She was so smart, so kind, so giving and yet she didn’t seem to realize her worth. I related to the way she was so in love with him and yet was so sure he was gonna turn her down. How she broker her back trying to make her friend happy and then trying not to make Adam uncomfortable with her big girl feelings. How clumsy and embarrassed she sometimes felt, not realizing Adam was crazy about her just the way she is.
Hands down, that sex scene was the best one I’ve read in my life. Like, I don’t even have to think about it too hard. It is the best. It had the right amount of sass, right amount of possessiveness, right amount of awkwardness that only made it seem real, down to earth. Like everything that transpired between those two might actually happen in real life (if I would only be so lucky). It was just… *chefs kiss*. I was utterly speechless, but pleasantly surprised. Like I never expected that from cute Adam who blushes while looking at Olive. I will say though, this book was advertised by so many people as smut and it’s really not. It only has that one sex scene and although it is very graphic and extremely well written, I was expecting so much more sex and kisses and touching. However, that’s not to say that the book was in some way wrong, it wasn’t, but I was expecting a little bit more.
Simply put, this book touched a tender spot in my heart that I don’t think any other book has touched before. And that’s saying something. Adam was so terribly kind, and Olive was so terribly adorable I just can’t deal. I hope everyone finds a book like this one, that’s speaks to them the way this one spoke to me. I hope [a:Ali Hazelwood|21098177|Ali Hazelwood|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1611084228p2/21098177.jpg] realizes what she’s done and that she keeps writing because that is definitely her calling. And please Ali, please write something about Adam and Olive again. We need to see them being open about their feelings, we need to see how their relationship develops beyond the too short epilogue. This humble reader is begging you. Anyway, I’m gonna be depressed about this for weeks to come, because I wish I could re-read this book for the very first time, and feel like I felt reading about Olive and Adam again.

I'm so fucking excited for this I can’t physically wait to read it. I’m gonna be so mad if it doesn’t end up in my absolute-favorites bookshelf. Expectations are HIGH for this baby.

“How many times have you done this?”
“Zero. But I am familiar with the trope.”
“The . . . what?” He blinked at her, confused.

“Olive,” Dr. Aslan interrupted her with a stern tone. “What do I always tell you?”
“Um . . . ‘Don’t misplace the multichannel pipette’?”
“The other thing.”
She sighed. “ ‘Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man.’ ”

“By now the moody, ill-tempered ass Adam meshed so well with her Adam, the one who bought her cookies and checked her slides and let her cry into his neck. There might have been a time when she couldn’t quite reconcile the two, but they were all so clear now, the many faces of him. She wouldn’t want to leave behind any of them. Not one.”

He took a deep breath. His shoulders rose and fell in time with the thudding of her heart. “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.”
Adam tried to look away and failed. “You are so beautiful.” The words were low and hushed, as though they’d slipped out of his mouth. Loose and unbidden, just like everything else about this.

“The things I want to do to you. You have no idea.”
“I think maybe I do.” She licked her lips. “Some, at least.” His eyes were glazed as he stroked the corner of her mouth, and Olive wondered how she could possibly be done with this, with him, in just a few hours.
“I doubt it.”

“He wasn’t very good at it. At standing there and doing nothing while her eyes welled fuller and fuller. She could tell that he felt useless, his hands dangling in fists at his sides, and she . . . she loved him even more for it. For looking at her like she was the beginning and end of his every thought.”

This felt like such a guilty pleasure read. I rolled my eyes the same amount of times I giggled to myself and kicked my feet.
I read this for a bookclub and because the movie is coming out soon. I had given up on Ali Hazelwood because I thought she was just not for me. But thanks to Love Hypothesis, I have finally found the spot that I hold for Ali Hazelwood. It is like drinking pumpkin spice 😋. I know I shouldn’t because it’s overly sweet and just not my favorite flavor; but when it’s around I order it anyways and secretly enjoy it. It is a guilty pleasure. The characterization was too straightforward for me (I felt like Adam was the only character that had some depth). The situations were just too convenient. Also, where IS the HR and the board of this university? Why do we have PROFESSORS dating students and walking around shirtless? 😭 Just so many things that it made me cringe a little.
But Adam… omg… He was just 🤧 I loved him. He’s definitely my 2nd favorite Ali MMC (Jack, you will always be number one 🫶). He had me giggling and blushing. The grumpyxsunshine trope to its finest and I ATE IT UP. I’m usually not a fan of the grumpy MMC but he just made sense! I absolutely loved him and the way their relationship developed.
Olive was okay. I just don’t like miscommunication in general and it would piss me off so bad every time she ALMOST go it and then just went for a lie. 😭 Like she would verbalize that lying was bad and this was the moment for her to tell the truth… aaaand then a lie would come out. 💀 It got a bit annoying to a certain point but I’m glad everything resolved and it had such a cute ending. 🥰
As for the side characters, I don’t have much to say. I didn’t grow attached to them and the friendships. I wish I could’ve seen a bit more development and detail on those relationships.
