Lady is told she is psycho, becomes psycho. I have always loved this story. Very relatable.

This is ultimately one of my favorite horror stories.
We get an unreliable narrator, suffering from postpartum depression and really just being punished for it. Her husband/physician doesn’t actually believe anything is wrong with her yet isn’t allowing her to do anything besides stay in this decaying room, including anything as simple express herself in writing. She immediately convinces herself that the room is a nursery but it’s more likely that it was used to house/imprison an insane person.  She has no escape or outlet besides staring at this funky wallpaper. Of course it’s going to start warping and her mind will play tricks on her. It’s almost funny that he’s so shocked in the end that he faints. What did he expect?

Definitely a great book to analyze and research afterwards. The more I think about it, the more I want to re read it now that I know the exact context. Extremely disturbing and sad.

A beautifully writen tragic story about mental health and sexism. Learning that it was written about the author's own experience made it more powerful.

I think I was expecting something more intense/ dramatic to happen at the end.

I'm not sure that this story translates to a modern audience well. I think its use of an unreliable narrator and the descent to madness are done well enough but the crux of the plot is not something most modern folks are aware of. If I were to ask someone what a "rest cure" is for, I doubt many people will know it was a treatment for postpartum women. I certainly sympathize with her being trapped and isolated somewhere and am not surprised that those actions would lead her to her descent. I don't think it has the same potency or impact it did previously, though.

This was one my friend had recommended to me. She mentioned that it had resurfaced on BookTok lately so I went to give it a go 😳

Creepy, haunting and well narrated. The woman definitely goes through an emotionally taxing time 🥲
