I have to say that these characters really drew me in in spite of the fact that sometimes I was just bored with the story. While it is interesting, I have to say that something that reads as literary fiction left me feeling what's the point? Like the ending--seems like there would have been more meaning, say if he'd gotten shot by her dad/brother because they discovered he'd been visiting their young daughter/sister rather than just an accident. It would have been a horrible irony, but at least it would have elevated the feeling above ho hum. I liked the movie much better than the book. I think (it's been a few years since I've seen the movie.)
