2.5 stars ...
Adeline's mother dies after giving birth to her, the 5th child. Her father remarries a beautiful, young, half-French woman - the epitome of the wicked stepmother. The verbal and emotional abuse heaped on Adeline and her siblings 9but mostly on her), as reported, is heartbreaking. It's a fascinating story. But ...

I couldn't help but wonder why Adeline didn't wake up and assert herself as she grew to adulthood. Perhaps it's because she is of a different culture than I, but she winds up sounding somewhat "whiny" to me.

The use of Chinese sayings (in chinese characters) was effective at first - but I got tired of this device.

This book is heartbreaking but such a good read. My only issue was constant back and forth with the timeline. I was constantly wondering what year and what country I was in. I’m also not well versed enough in Chinese history and definitely needed to look things up while reading this.

This was a moving autobiographical story of a girl growing up in the shadow of loss, of her attempts to find her place and feel loved in her family and the world.

After 12 Years

I've read Chinese Cinderella countless times over the last 12 or so years and finally being able to learn more about Adeline's life from her university days and beyond was both heartbreaking and beautiful. I wish I could have met her.
