One of my favorite books of the year. An incredibly touching story about perseverance through kindness and love.

I thought I had read this book at least once in grade school, but I must have been mistaken because I didn’t remember it at all. I know I owned it back then, though

I read this in middle school and loved it. I've been on a journey of literature rediscovery and I felt a re-read was in order for this one. It did not disappoint. My adult heart and mind enjoyed it just as much as my middle school heart and mind did. Truly a wonderful story.

I read this as a child in the 80s and reread this with my 6th grader for his historical reading project.

It gives a very good picture of a girls life during true 1800s in Connecticut. It is slow to ramp up and gentle with its story line. In general, while I still got a happy glow from finishing it I do not think I would have continued had I not been reading it with my kiddo.

While I think there are other books that would speak to a modern kid more than this book did, I enjoyed the conversations started by this book. Especially around reading, books and of course naming a person a witch.

My impression of this book was that it is a solid piece of young adult historical fiction. The political history was detailed and I imagine, well-researched although I haven't checked with other sources to determine accuracy. The main character fell short for me as being a somewhat weak feminine heroine. Her main concerns are to fit in and achieve her dream. Without spoiling it, I found her to be somewhat shallow and irritating. I would recommend the book on its great account of puritan life in early New England America.
