Did not end up finishing this book. I read the first quarter, the skimmed through and read the ending. There was a lot about magic and spells, which isn’t my thing at all.

[b:A House Without Windows|27213250|A House Without Windows|Nadia Hashimi|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1450648776s/27213250.jpg|47255219] tells the story of Zeba, a Afghan woman who is accused of murdering her husband.

The book brings to light the way the judicial system in Afghanistan treats women - throwing them in jail or sentencing them to death at the slightest rumour of their dishonour and finding them at fault when in fact they've been victims of men's manipulations, assault, or rape. In court, a woman's witness testimony counts for only half of a man's.

It's a heartbreaking but powerful story. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading Hashimi's other work.

For two decades, Zeba was a loving wife, a patient mother, and a peaceful villager. But her quiet life is shattered when her husband, Kamal, is found brutally murdered with a hatchet in the courtyard of their home. Nearly catatonic with shock, Zeba is unable to account for her whereabouts at the time of his death. Her children swear their mother could not have committed such a heinous act. Kamal's family is sure she did, and demands justice.
