A tedious read. The dialogue feels forced and it is the majority of the book. Very little action. This book put me to sleep several times. I ended up skimming the last 50 pages or so because I didn’t want to DNF but I was bored out of my mind. How do you take an Arthurian inspired book and make it this boring? Sir Gawain read more like King Pellinore from TH White’s The Once and Future King, utterly ridiculous. And Axl calling his wife “Princess” every. single. time. he addressed her got old by about page 10. One of the worst books I’ve read.

As much as I'm a fan of Ishiguro, I have to agree with other reviews I've read: this book just doesn't capture the same magic as his other works.

Ishiguro's prose is, as always, beautiful. I think it just didn't translate well to a fantasy setting when one is accustomed to reading fantasy novels. The big reveal near the end also wasn't a grand as the various theories flying around in my own head, so it was a bit of a letdown. I did enjoy the book, but not nearly as much as Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go.

I believe this goes in the allegory category, no? I really liked the slow, contemplative pace. I'm always up for mysticism too. Sweet and sad, definitely about the journey, not the destination. Seemed so often when people got what they wanted it wasn't what they thought. A thoughtful story.

Fascinating study of memory, love, and duty, though a bit unfocused and lackluster in meaning. Beautiful prose and well drawn, complicated characters. Loved the beginning, but the final quarter drags.

No lo he pillado.

I was so excited to win this ARC in a giveaway, but it fell kind of flat for me. I appreciated the style of the writing and the memory theme, but I don't know, the subtlety was just lost on me or something.
