Tough book to get thru; lots of subtext and complexity. There were numerous themes present - illusion to obfuscate hard truths, deception, betrayal, identity, consequences, and more. It was well written, but this is a tough one to chew on and mull over.

Ishiguro really loves a book about someone (sometimes more than one person) who gives up their life and personal desires for a cause that is, in the end, not worth it. On that scale I rank Axl, Gawain and Wistan somewhere below Stevens but above Kathy, Ruth and Tommy and Klara, in terms of how impactful their stories are.
