The five stories in this collection were evidently selected for their consistent amenability to a certain political viewpoint. It is a viewpoint I can sympathize with, but I find little enjoyment in literature fabricated around a pious allegiance to a message. The most pleasurable writing on offer here is found in Jelena Lengold’s “Jasmine and death” (transl. Zoran Paunović), but even this one casts the shadow of a sermon.
