A Shot of Pretty Poison - The Pretty Poison Trilogy #3 - Review
Couple: Laiken & Hayes
Author: Kelsey Klayton
Tropes: hockey romance, college romance, sports romance, best friend’s sister romance, brother’s best friend romance, forced proximity, first love, secret relationship, friends to lovers
Review: A bittersweet ending to the trilogy of Laiken and Hayes. The books begins with the aftermath of Laiken leaving town.
This book made me hate Laiken a little at first. Since the first few chapters are from Hayes’ POV we really grasp how much her leaving hurt him and add on the things going on with his family…it broke my heart how lost he was. I really loved Hayes in this final chapter. It would have been so easy to write him accepting her back easy and I was happy that Kelsey did not do that. I felt like Laiken needed to go through the hardship of earning everyone’s trust back and then explaining the why of her predicament.
I loved and hated Laiken during the ending to their story. I was happy that she was able to get stronger than she was at the end of book two but also hated that at first she seemed to be fine about leaving Hayes. While I enjoyed the layers of Laiken’s feelings it was written perfectly for how young the couple was. Laiken had a lot of maturing to do in this book and I felt like the anger Hayes had toward her pushed her to do it.
This book has intense spice. At first it is a l to of hate and love mixing together and each of them has different takes on it. I personally favored Hayes because he was so conflicted that his POV made it finger-biting good.
The finale of this book answers our questions and throws us for new loops. We see the reemergence of someone we thought was long gone and a huge plot twist is thrown in when we discover who is targeting Laiken.
This book will keep you on the edge of you seat and binging it until the last page!
Rating: 10/10, YAAAS!

With A Shot of Pretty Poison, we get the conclusion to the story within a story. Likewise, we see how Laiken and Hayes’ relationship will evolve and learn whether or not forgiveness can be found after her betrayal.
Kelsey really worked her magic with this series. If you read my review of Dose, you’ll know that, while I loved it, I wasn’t sure how she was going to pull off a trilogy with Laiken and Hayes’ forbidden love story. She dropped (pun intended) a bomb on us in Drop with the secondary storyline. And she went for the 5-star trifecta with Shot.
I was an emotional basket case with all the heartbreak and sexual tension. My stomach was in knots over the game of cat and mouse. I couldn’t read the words fast enough. I NEEDED to know how this was going to play out and I couldn’t be happier with this installment or series. The cherry on top would be getting Cam and Mali’s story!

Did I read this trilogy within 2 days? Possibly. Do I regret it? Nope, not in the least.
Kelsey Clayton has beyond snagged herself another fangirl because holy buttercup-jizz (yes, I worded that exactly as I planned), this blew me away. Possibly a bit predictable, only because I was picking up on the foreshadowing but I am not disappointed in the least.
Laiken and Hayes relationship was beyond words - it was all consuming. I could not put this series down once I got started, it just was not possible.

solidly better than the first two but this trilogy could’ve been easily condensed to one book. again, not a hockey romance. more like beach murder mystery with a possessive romance. better character development. plot twist was moderately predictable.
