You need to read this book! I wish I’d read them in order, but when I bought this I did it on a whim, I’d never heard of the author. This is one of the best crime novels I’ve read and I couldn’t put it down. It was compelling, had a twist in almost every chapter, had likeable funny characters, a terrific court room setting that didn’t get bogged down with jargon and a it kept me hooked right up until the final page. I can’t wait to read the others!

I absolutely loved it from the first page to the last one.

The Defence was the first book written by Steve Cavanagh that I've read, and now I know I must buy and read all other books (the existing and the future ones!)

Eddie Flynn - a former con artist and a lawyer is caught by Russian Mafia to defend their boss in the court. Or actually to eliminate a witness who can put him behind the bars. Skills from both professions become very handy. Eddie has 48 hours to solve the case, rescue a loved one and get out of the court alive.

I really enjoyed the characters development, how we learn about people, their past and connections. How loyalty can blind you and how painful can be the betrayal. Most of all, how powerful is love and how much you can do to save others.

The book is full of action and twists, it's really hard to stop reading it! Fast-pace legal thriller with lots of emotions, you'll mix holding your breath with excitement.

It's the first book in the series and it definitely invites the reader to Eddie's dangerous world.

My mind is blown. Another fantastic rollercoaster ride with Eddie Flynn.

The Defence is the first book of the Eddie Flynn series. I picked it in high hopes it will get me back on track during the biggest reading slump, ever. If it wasn’t for the dreaded slump I would probably have got through this book in a day. It was that good!

I grew fond of Eddie Flynn in Th1rt3en and I was delighted to be reunited with him. Cavanagh did not disappoint, that’s for sure. This legal thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very start.

All in all – it was what I had expected. A fast paced, nail biting, race against time with witty characters and an explosive ending (no pun intended!). A real page turner. Cavanagh really knows how to tell a brilliant story.

5 out of 5 stars.

4.5 Stars
I picked up the thriller Thirteen on audible before realising it was the 4th in a series. Although I probably could have started there, I have learned in the past that it is really better to start a series from the beginning. So I thought I would check out Eddie Flynn 1 – The Defence. So glad I did! The audio version of this was brilliant! So much fun!

The Story

Eddie is having a REALLY bad day. First thing he is eating breakfast, the next he is in court – where he swore he would never be again, defending a mob boss with a bomb around him about to go off at any minute. And they have his 10-year-old daughter and are going to kill her if he doesn't win this case...

My Thoughts

Oh man I loved it! NON STOP ACTION and TWIST AFTER TWIST! I got through this one so quickly because I could not stop listening!!

It was like reading an action movie. It literally did not stop. And I just LOVED the courtroom stuff. I mean sure, you have to suspend your beliefs slightly, but that’s what books are for DAMMIT!

The writing was fabulous, I really enjoyed the way he describes complex legal mumbo jumbo easily so that anyone can understand what is happening, and it was just so darn clever with those twists and turns.

I have already purchased the next one! I LOVED IT!

What did I think of the audio version?

Like a movie in my ears! Absolutely fantastic! I was a bit sad when it ended, but happy because there are MORE IN THE SERIES!

Would I recommend The Defence?

Yes absolutely! I thought it was just fantastic! I am sure most thriller fans will enjoy this one! Especially if they love a bit of courtroom drama and crazy twists.
