I know many people have reservations about Game of Thrones for its sexual and its cliche fantasy setting, but it honestly doesn't deserve all the hate.

First of all, the writing style sort of mimics Old English (e.g. "Ser" instead of "Sir"), which I thought was really interesting. As far as world building goes, George RR Martin did great. Even as a fantasy world, it still feels oddly relatable.

I know a lot of people say that the book is sexist, and I honestly disagree. If it was sexist, then Danny, Arya, Sansa, and Catelyn would not all be such central characters that have their own point of views. Obviously, the women aren't (in the first book at least) as involved in all the action, but they're portrayed to be real and interesting. They have their own goals and ambitions that don't revolve around men, which is a nice breeze from how fantasy books tend to be.

And yeah, it's a fantasy book, so some elements are going to sound cliche. If you're a fantasy nerd, you'll like it. If you're chasing after an original book which has a never before seen plot/setting, find another book.

Definitely lives up to the praise other readers have given.

I was pleased with how each character's point of view stood alone and progressed the story. There were no overlapping events unless it played to push the plot story forward, we were unable to understand why each piece happened, and a feel for all those who are aiming for the throne. Even though who were not given their own part were fleshed out through other's POV where we were even able to gather where they stood by the end.

--SPOILERS--

I'm displeased by Ned being beheaded even though he set his honor aside at an attempt to save his daughters, yet I get it was to show how much Joff is a boy king and he is not fit to rule despite how much Cersei will push it is his "right". I felt if he was going to be beheaded he should have spoken the truth or at the very least the start of it. I suppose it will serve as a way to give the drive for his children to push forward against the Lannisters and all else who stand against them.

Unfairness is what Dany had to go through. Sure she may have her dragons now, but at what cost? I have a rant in mind and cannot get the words quite together. I feel like she was cheated though. She was forced to marry a man, she ended up loving him, and when he finally was willing to endure the travel over water it was snatched from her as well as Drogo.

I'm a huge fan of the show, but the books couldn't hold my attention. I tried to love it and managed to read halfway through the third book before finally throwing in the towel. Sorry, G.R.R.M, but this book isn't for me.

Edit after seeing the final season: Hahaha.

This was a VERY intense book. Stuff is just constantly going down for no freaking reason and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. I hope you all are prepared for the pure crazy that happens. Also, it was a very slow book to start. I decided to round up from my real 3.5 rating because the book is very well written, and even though it bounces around from person to person, the story is cohesive and new and fresh and I really appreciated that. I will take some time to watch the first season of Game of Thrones before jumping in to the next book, if only to save myself from future heartache. Well done though.
