I think what I liked best about the book was the way the Barrowmans made all the kids (the twins and the friend they pick up) into real kids -- feeling smart, being stupid, and understanding that both of those states can coexist. They even acknowledge that adults sometimes know what they're doing, and in fact call for help when things get dangerous!

I'll admit that I bought this book because I'm a huge Barrowman fangirl.
That said, it's a really well-written book. It's aimed at probably the middle school age set. I love the idea of powerful imaginations and blending it with art and legends. I will probably pass this on to my Percy Jackson-loving kiddo.
Looking forward to the sequel

Interesting concept. Well written. Ready for the second book. I really want to give 3.5 stars! :) Goodreads needs a half star system...
Hollow Earth by John Barrowman and Carole E. Barrowman is a wonderful addition to the fantasy genre. Twins Matt and Emily Calder are both Animare - people who can bring drawings to life. Their special gift also puts them in a dangerous situation.
Lots of action and adventure in this story will thrill any reader and the story is fresh and interesting. A wonderful book!!

Surprisingly good for a celebrity co-written book. The plot was well-thought out, the characters were well-rounded and interesting. The only thing the stopped it being 5 stars was the flashbacks with the monks. Even by the end I wasn't really sure what the purpose was, since the explanation wasn't given, or at least not clearly.
This is a fun, quick read for kids. The central characters are likable but not yet fully developed. The bad guys are somewhat intriguing with plenty left to learn about them. Obviously the first in a series, the story left me wanting to know what comes next for Matt, Em, and their friends. The pace is quick, and the plot is decent though I would hope for a bit more complexity as the series continues. The book barely begins to reveal a back story and a magical world that would surely be interesting though the second book appears to be currently unavailable except in electronic formats.
Minule seostub John Barrowmani eelkõige kapten Jackiga seriaalist Doctor Who.

The plot was a bit hard to follow at times but the concept was very interesting and clearly well thought out. They also did a good job at writing for the target audience's age in terms of how the MC's acted.
A novel full of magic and adventure, in which imagination plays the biggest role : the main characters, the twin children , use it and abuse it for fun, money, and to escape dangerous situations, while the adults try either to help them take full control of it, or to take advantage of it. The children's powers are fascinating and the story is full of thrills and suspense, and though some tricks and plot devices are not entirely convincing, the story is a pageturner and it leaves enough threads hanging for the reader to look forward to the next novel.
