I bought this book as a "blind date with a book" kind of thing, so I can say that I had really no idea what I was getting into when I first looked at it. I don't regret reading this book, obviously, and it has several very good qualities: the plot is worked out into immense detail and the story keeps you on your toes right up to the last page, I love the whole concept of the book, and the characters are definitely not uninteresting. It's just that I expected something different from the description that was on the packaging (it said "fantasy & science-fiction": true; "reality show": more or less?; "alternate dimension": clearly; "antihero is the star": well, Caine certainly is a star and he does have something of an antihero).
That description had everything for me, especially because usually I'm all for assholes who are also reluctant good guys. But this guy was just removed from good and bad until his personal life is right before his eyes and in terrible danger and I just.. don't care as much?
Another thing that upset me a little about this book, and which I think should have been one of the categories on the packaging, is the absolute violence it portrays. I like to think I'm not so touchy as to be unable to take any kind of graphic descriptions of violence, torture or rape fantasies, but honestly, this was a bit much and I had no warning for this whatsoever until I was already into the book and sucked up by the story. If it weren't for this, I probably would have given the book 4 stars out of 5, because it really is put together very well and it did pull me right in.

Shit-covered, bloody, wolf-grin bearing wild ride from start to beginning. God damn, this was filthy good.
