First off, cheers to Thomas Stacey for the recommendation.. This book is definitely going in as one of my absolute faves for 2017.

"I have lived every day of my life only to bring myself here to this moment and it has been worth every moment"

This author has written an epic love story that you're not even totally aware of until you're sucked in. This isn't hearts and roses strewn on the floor. This is like blood, guts, broken bones, severed limbs, bring down the gaddamn world kind of love story. Like your favourite epic love story ain't got nothing on this.

Like i said this isn't some quintessential love book. There's so much more than that happening. You're introduced to an eclectic range of characters from: Berne - this dude was bloody insane, like if you ever meet someone like this, just run!; To that snivelling, whinny piece of shit, poet boy. To Talan- God that woman could kick bloody ass. To Shanna/ Pallis- who really was a shit though. i mean, really, she was a shit. To gaddamn Hari / Caine - sigh* that man was beyond everything. he was damn amazing.

Read this book. You won't be disappointed!

DID NOT FINISH: 46%

Too grim (but take this as a recommendation, not a negative if you enjoy grimdark.  It's not really for me though.)

Overall a solid book. Not well written in the sense that the author is in no way trying to awe or inspire you with the quality of his phrases, but rather to tell a story. In that sense, the book was a bit deep, since out of a bunch of obvious action-hero lines, Stover managed to pull together something with an unexpected amount of intrigue and emotion. Recommended for other science fiction/fantasy readers why don't mind gritty fantasy, but no one else.

i don't understand the hype. the mechanics of the actor/overworld universe is interesting I guess. i was not blown away by any of the characters or world building. writing was average. it just didn't appeal to me.

This was quite a ride! I wasn't really sure what to expect when I started it. It had been recommended to me as an action packed, dark and exciting fantasy story, so I didn't even read the blurb, I just jumped in. I was a little thrown off at first.. It starts out seeming like straight up fantasy, and then all of a sudden it turned all science fiction on me... I'm not a huge fan of science fiction so I was immediately a little worried.. But the blending worked in this one, it really really worked.

Action packed. Gruesome. Foul language... It's got it all. But it wasn't as bad as I expected. Based on what I had heard, I was afraid it would be too dark or violent for me, but it wasn't at all. Maybe that's just because I went into it expecting it to be really extreme? It actually felt a lot tamer than I thought it would be. Not in a bad way.. I was just surprised.

Caine is a bad ass. Seriously.. He's kicks some serious ass. The supporting characters were well developed.. I won't get into my individual assessments of each of them for fear of spoiling something. The world.. Crazy detailed. You can tell that Stover is a well read author, the world is so well developed and interesting.. When the story starts out I was a little confused.. You sort of get thrown in head first, and I felt like I was missing a lot and not comprehending what was going on.. There were a lot of things that confused me, that I felt like I was supposed to figure out on my own, but as it turned out I just had to be patient.. It was all explained in due time. Once I realized this I relaxed, and that's when I finally got really into the story.

The ending.. Did not disappoint. At all. And that's all I'm saying about that.

All in all, a great read. Almost perfect. 4.5 stars.

A brutal adventure that is a meditation on violence, media and our participation in it, it’s a wonderful book if you have the stomach for it.
