I give this book a 4.5. It is such a delightful book for middle grade children. The mystery reminded me of Clue and the protagonist, Tabitha, had such a great mind and personality. Overall, it was a fun read and had some elements of classic books in it that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Sadly this wasn't a magical read for me. Was not terrible and I can see why many likes it both children and adults. But wasn't my cup of tea.

this was fun! think willie wonka with a healthy dash of mystery (i saw it described as willie wonka meets clue - why didn't i think of that?!).

six children, including tabitha crum, are invited to a manor house along with their parents. the invitation promises that one of the children will be named heir to the fortune of the countess... but things at the house are not what they seem! tabitha, unlike the other children, doesn't have a happy home, and doesn't know what it's like to be rich. but she DOES know how to pay attention to detail, and loves a good mystery story. each chapter starts with a quote from the fictitious Inspector Percival Pensive, Tabitha's favorite sleuth. along with Pemberley, her trusty mouse sidekick, Tabitha starts discovering all the secrets of the house, and gains a family along the way.

good for middle grade readers. might not have a lot of substance for adults, but still a fun read.

Six children around London receive a cryptic invitation to stay the weekend at the patalial country home belonging to the famous recluse, the Countess Camilla DeMoss. With seemingly nothing in common but their identical invitations, the group wonders if possible fortune awaits them, or if the rumors of ghosts and eccentric behavior of their hostess promises something more sinister. Part Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and part Scooby Doo mystery, this book is a page turner with so many twists and turns, each clue will leave you more puzzled until Lawson skillfully pulls it together.

I would have enjoyed this book more as a kid for sure. I still enjoyed it as an adult but I figured out the mysteries all too quickly! Still it was sweet and had many emotions that I felt as a child. It didn't shy away from the horrors of neglect and abuse or even of the terribleness of other children. If your middle reader loves mysteries give them this book!
