SOO GOOD...i knew this would be fun but i was not expecting to CRY at the end...!!!!!! and i thought I had things figured out but then I was wrong... which was so nice because lately I've been guessing lots of plot twists
i was not getting a good feeling from the faux countess (mary) but I just thought she was evil & wanted to kill one of the kids not that she wasn't really the countess....and i was sure that she actually had killed millie...and i was not expecting there to be twins everywhere because I suppose I forgot that some middle grade authors are positively obsessed with twins...
and the illustrations were SO good I just desperately wish there were more of them. and I loved tabitha and pemberley and hattie and the epilogue was SO sweet ... the one thing is I kind of don't get why tabitha's parents would adopt her at all if they were just going to hate her their whole lives....? i know their reasoning was to marry her off but I feel like they would kind of at least try to be nice to her. because she could always marry rich then just ignore them. but that doesn't matter
anyway this was so delightful and fun. and the only thing better would be if there had been more illustrations

I was a little thrown off at first but the pace of the plot but once we got into the thick of it, it made more sense.
Narration was fantastic. I don't want to say to much about the novel because I don't want to ruin it for anyone else.

Adorable! It's like Roald Dahl's Matilda was dropped into a Downton Abbey-era mystery written by Agatha Christie. Surprisingly dark for a kid's book too.

A blinking fun jaunt through mystery, and the heart of the protagonist -- Nooks and Crannies has a charming voice, well-etched characters, and a mystery worth the turn of each page. It manages to balance the funky pop sensation of young adult and children's tales with a classic more literary connection and conventions. But it's heart and highlight are its ability to pull out gems from Tabitha, the protagonist and erstwhile orphan, who grows, learns, and remarks on her world with credible earnestness and depth of feeling. A good mystery, all around, unique and in style of predecessors on the classic's shelf. I'd read it aloud to my youngest siblings any day. But I read it to myself quite happily.
...and now can discuss it with the 11 year old little brother.
