I’m still unsure on my feelings towards this book. I definitely resonated with the daddy issues, but I also didn’t enjoy a lot of this book. The first half was pretty mid but the second half was alright. I enjoyed the drama ig?

It’s not a retelling, McIntire tells you that from the beginning, but I really do enjoy it. Dark romance, villain gets the girl, that’s my shit. I did think Wendy was won over by James a bit too fast (both times), but I like them both as characters. The plot twist was an easy one to guess, though.

This was not my cup of tea. It was salacious without substance and the shock factor was not done well enough to make me come around to liking any of the characters despite their serious flaws. I also didn’t buy the romance or chemistry between the main characters. And there was so much abuse and fucked up behavior, which I was prepared for going in, but all the complexity was so shallow it didn’t even count for me. Glad other people liked it! Wasn’t high enough caliber writing to get me invested.

This was my first true dark romance book and turns out, it isn’t for me. I didn’t expect the gore to be quite as detailed as it is and the lowkey necrophilia was flat out disgusting to me. It made me nauseous. I likely will not pick up another dark romance book again.
