Fantastic novel, but has some very difficult material, but the story is told so well!

I wasn't sure if I would like this book because it centers around a church; I am not religious and I was afraid it would have a preachy subtext. I need not have worried. It was the perfect book of people being people and a great example of how generational pain is passed on. It was more than your average thriller, but it did have some great shocking moments. I highly recommend this. Trigger warnings abound!

5 ⭐️ read! This was such a well written book, it’s hard to believe this is a debut! This will be in my top books of the year and favorite debut I have read in a while. The audiobook narration was excellent. Highly recommend it. I went back and forth between the print and audio and I could not put it down. I loved the multiple points of view, the friendships, that the church had its own point of view. Some characters weren’t likable but you got to know them and how they came to be like that. And I loved the Chicago setting. Fun fact, I grew up near the southwest side of Chicago and love how the author described the city. It’s a great city with good energy and a lot of distinct neighborhoods, with grit and problems but the best people. Gave me a bit of nostalgia. Highly recommend! I can’t wait to see what the author writes next!
