Eine merkwürdige Geschichte. Obwohl ich vorige Romane von Zweig geliebt habe, schien mir diese kurze Erzählung als überflüssig und, ehrlich gesagt, völlig unnötig. Schade, angesichts Zweigs Zärtlichkeit und Fähigkeiten, um sehr gute Bücher schreiben zu können.

A lively discussion ensues among the hotel guests when a married woman runs off with a young man after having only just met him. Could a ‘coup de foudre’ overcome the will and intelligence of a woman of good standing? It seems that only the narrator himself doesn’t deny this possibility. Then, an elegant older English woman comes to him and tells her story. A short, but captivating novella that kept me transfixed. The author’s descriptions in the casino are fascinating and so perceptive. I am not sure that what it says places it in the must read category, but the writing certainly makes it well worth reading.
